What Does It Mean To “Go Organic”

“Go organic” is a phrase that encourages individuals and businesses to adopt practices and make choices that prioritize organic products and organic farming methods. Going organic involves opting for products and practices that adhere to specific organic standards and principles. Here’s what “go organic” means in more detail:

Choosing Organic Products

It involves selecting and purchasing products that have been certified as organic. This typically applies to food items such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and processed foods. Organic products are grown, produced, or processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and artificial additives or preservatives. Organic farming methods also promote animal welfare and sustainable land use.

Supporting Organic Agriculture

Going organic means supporting and promoting organic farming practices. This includes choosing to buy organic produce, but it goes beyond that. It involves advocating for and investing in sustainable and environmentally friendly farming methods. Organic agriculture focuses on soil health, biodiversity, and reduced chemical usage to create a more sustainable food system.

Reducing Chemical Exposure

Going organic aims to reduce personal and environmental exposure to synthetic chemicals commonly used in conventional farming. By choosing organic foods and products, individuals can limit their intake of chemical residues and contribute to cleaner water and soil.

Promoting Sustainability

Going organic aligns with sustainability principles. Organic farming practices prioritize the long-term health of the environment, soil, and ecosystems. This includes practices such as crop rotation, composting, and the use of natural fertilizers, which enhance soil fertility and reduce the need for synthetic chemicals.

Supporting Animal Welfare

In the context of animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs, going organic means supporting practices that prioritize the humane treatment of animals. Organic standards often require better living conditions and access to outdoor areas for animals.

Minimizing Environmental Impact

Choosing organic products and supporting organic farming contributes to a reduced environmental footprint. Organic farming methods aim to minimize water pollution, soil erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Advocating for Transparency

Going organic involves advocating for transparency in the food system. It encourages labeling and certification systems that help consumers identify and trust organic products.

Promoting Healthy Eating

Going organic often aligns with a focus on healthier eating habits. Organic foods are typically free of artificial additives and preservatives, and they may have higher nutrient levels, making them a choice for individuals seeking a healthier diet.

Overall, “go organic” encourages a shift towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible choices in food, agriculture, and other aspects of daily life. It is a commitment to making choices that prioritize health, environmental well-being, and ethical treatment of animals.

Whats The Difference Between Organic and Non-Organic?

The primary difference between organic and non-organic products lies in the methods used in their production and the standards they adhere to. Here are the key distinctions between organic and non-organic:

1. Farming Practices:

  • Organic: Organic farming uses natural and sustainable practices. It avoids the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic farming prioritizes soil health through techniques like crop rotation, composting, and reduced chemical usage.
  • Non-organic: Conventional or non-organic farming typically uses synthetic chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides to control pests and weeds. GMO crops are often grown, and chemical fertilizers may be used to boost crop yields.

2. Chemical Usage:

  • Organic: Organic products are produced without synthetic chemicals. Organic farmers rely on natural alternatives, like beneficial insects and organic pesticides, to manage pests and diseases.
  • Non-organic: Conventional farming relies on synthetic chemicals for pest control and may use chemical fertilizers to enhance soil nutrients.

3. Soil Health:

  • Organic: Organic farming practices prioritize soil health and fertility through organic matter, composting, and reduced chemical usage. These methods improve soil structure and promote biodiversity.
  • Non-organic: Conventional farming may lead to soil degradation due to the use of synthetic chemicals, which can harm beneficial soil organisms and reduce soil fertility over time.

4. Genetic Modification:

  • Organic: Organic products are generally non-GMO. The use of genetically modified organisms is prohibited in organic farming.
  • Non-organic: Non-organic products, particularly in the case of certain crops like soybeans and corn, may be genetically modified.

5. Antibiotics and Growth Hormones (Animal Products):

  • Organic: Organic animal farming restricts the use of antibiotics and growth hormones. Animals are typically raised in more humane conditions.
  • Non-organic: Conventional animal farming may involve the use of antibiotics and growth hormones to promote growth and prevent disease.

6. Certification and Labeling:

  • Organic: Organic products are certified by organizations like the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) or equivalent bodies in other countries. They carry organic labels, such as “USDA Organic,” to indicate compliance with organic standards.
  • Non-organic: Non-organic products do not carry specific organic certifications. They may have conventional labels or may not be labeled as organic.

7. Environmental Impact:

  • Organic: Organic farming tends to have a lower environmental impact. It reduces the risk of water pollution, soil erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Non-organic: Conventional farming practices can contribute to environmental issues such as chemical runoff, soil degradation, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

8. The Price:

  • Organic: Organic products often come at a premium price due to the higher costs associated with organic farming practices.
  • Non-organic: Non-organic products may be more affordable but can carry hidden costs related to environmental and health impacts.

In summary, the primary difference between organic and non-organic products is the farming practices and standards they adhere to. Organic products are produced using natural and sustainable methods, while non-organic products may rely on synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms. The choice between organic and non-organic often reflects personal values related to health, environmental sustainability, and ethical farming practices.

Top 10 Reasons To Go Organic

In an increasingly fast-paced world, making mindful choices about the food we eat and the products we use has never been more critical. One such choice is the decision to go organic. Organic living is not just a trend; it’s a conscious, eco-friendly lifestyle that can have profound benefits for both you and the planet. Here are ten compelling reasons why you should consider going organic:

1. Healthier for You and Your Family

According to research, organic food is less likely to contain pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce. By going organic, you reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals that can impact your health.

2. Nutrient-Rich Foods

Organic farming practices prioritize soil health, resulting in nutrient-rich soil and, in turn, more nutritious crops. Studies have shown that organic fruits and vegetables often contain higher levels of essential vitamins and minerals.

3. Chemical-Free Living

Organic products are produced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This means fewer chemicals in your body and a cleaner, safer environment for future generations.

6. Enhancing Soil Fertility

Organic farming relies on natural fertilizers and crop rotation, which improves soil fertility over time. Healthy soil not only yields better crops but also sequesters carbon, mitigating climate change.

7. Protecting Pollinators

Organic farms tend to have more diverse plant life, creating habitats for beneficial insects and pollinators like bees. This supports biodiversity and contributes to the global food supply.

8. Minimizing Food Waste

Organic farming often involves fewer chemicals and preservatives, resulting in fresher produce with longer shelf lives. This reduces food waste, a significant issue worldwide.

9. Tasty and Fresh Flavors

Organic foods are celebrated for their rich, natural flavors. Without the masking effect of synthetic chemicals, you can savor the true essence of your favorite fruits and vegetables.

  • Great info!!! I couldn't have said it better myself! I even printed a copy to send to my sister:) Thanks for putting a wealth of health info out there for us to learn and live by! Great advice!!!

  • There are pros and cons to organic stuff. They cost more, but what really frosts me is the notion that I might be paying more for nothing. I mean, how do you know you're really getting the pesticide/chemical/hormone-free stuff?

  • I was very skeptical about using Stevia. I refuse to use artificial sweeteners and was searching for a healthier, natural alternative to sugar. I have researched Stevia and apparently Stevia-based sweeteners have been used in Japan since the 1970s – ever since that country banned artificial sweeteners. To this date, after being used by tens of millions of people for more than 40 years, there has not been a single consumer complaint about Stevia.

I have been using the Sweetleaf brand for several months now and absolutely love it! You can now purchase it at any Whole Foods store.

SweetLeaf can be used in hot drinks, cold drinks, is great on cereal, brings out the delicious flavors in fruits, can be used in cooking and baking, makes great-tasting desserts and is incredible in smoothies and blended drinks.
