Introducing a revolutionary new salad bag made from microfiber. This totally reusable bag will keep your salad and other vegetables fresh and dry for a longer period of time. This is an eco-friendly salad storage device that really works. The high-tech microfiber material is designed to pull moisture away from your produce and then eliminate it. Your vegetables stay dry and protected from the circulating air of your fridge, so they remain crispy and fresh. You will always have clean fresh salad greens right when you want them, and thanks to this great bag you can keep them fresh longer. It is totally reusable and can be machine washed hundreds of times before it needs replacing. It is great as a practical, and space saving solution to keep your produce fresh. Since it is a fabric bag instead of some large bulky plastic container, it can conform to any shape, and fit just about anywhere in your fridge. When it is not in use, the bag folds neatly to be stowed in a drawer. Just wash and dry your lettuce, and place it in the bag. Close tight with the drawstring at the opening and then place in your refrigerator. Enjoy the great taste of fresh vegetables for days longer than usual. Keep them dry and protected to help them stay crisp and tasty.

Picture this: sitting down to a dinner with the freshest organic vegetables your friends or family have ever tasted. And knowing that they are super charged with goodness and nutrition – priceless!

It might be the juiciest and most flavorsome tomatoes, a salad made up of crisp leafy greens, or perhaps a tabouleh of “vitamin-C-super-rich” parsley and in-season herbs – and that’s just the first course!

And what if your main course veggies selection meant just popping out to the garden and to see which are the ripest ones today?

Now take that thought a step further:

Wouldn’t it be great to open your pantry and see jars of preserves that you (and the kids?) made from your surplus fruit and vegetables – and that’s after you supplied your neighbors as well!

You can do all of this if you set about creating your own veggie patch.

We all pay a lot for the convenience of one-stop shopping at supermarkets, or paying more for organic produce. And now, finding ways to save money has lowered the importance of convenience. More and more people are discovering just how much money they can save by growing their own vegetables.

There are some expensive perennial vegetables, like asparagus, that are able to be harvested for up to 15 years! You plant it once, look after it, and just keep picking it.

You can even grow useful vegetables and herbs on window sills and on balconies – cherry tomatoes and parsley are classic examples.

Science has proven that fresh vegetables have more vitamins and minerals. The longer they are on the supermarket shelves, the less nutritious they become. And once your family tastes really fresh produce, they will learn what those vegetables really ARE supposed to taste like!

Good Stuff for the Kitchen

So whether your goal is to have the freshest food possible on your table or to save money – or both – there has never been a better time to start to grow your own organic vegetables than now.

Growing your own organic vegetables ticks all the boxes: easy, cheap, nutritious, fresh!

In these days of hustle and bustle, lots of people have high pressure, high tech lives. Being able to come home to tend a garden seems to ‘anchor’ them. Not only do they enjoy getting their hands dirty, but the pleasure of putting fresh crisp vegetables on the table is beyond compare.

Don’t be afraid to start your own organic vegetable patch, it isn’t that hard and there’s lots of free advice available, great newsletters and how-to guides. Great advice from organic gardeners is available at YourOrganicGardeningBlog http://www.YourOrganicGardeningBlog.com

There’s so much buzz about organic foods these days. It’s becoming more and more mainstream all the time. Conscientious moms (and dads) are voting with their dollars and big business is finally listening. You may even purchase some organic milk or maybe organic apples at your house. If you’re like I was initially, you go to pick up the gallon of organic milk, and you’re eye catches the price difference of the conventional milk. You may feel a twinge of uncertainty – is this really worth it or am I being taken for a ride here? Or, you may all ready know what I now realize, that organic foods are very important for growing children’s bodies, and you feel a bit mad that you have to pay more in order to provide your kids with food that’s not covered in cancer-causing pesticides or that didn’t come from genetically modified seeds. You may even wonder (yes,I have wondered this), what was I thinking when I signed-up for this parenting thing? I certainly never realized how much I would be thinking about things like food and poop (that’s a whole other story). But, here I am and I am thinking about those things because I have little people who are counting on that fact.

What is Organic Exactly?

So, back to what’s all the buzz about organic? Well, first let’s define organic. I’ll refer to Dr. Alan Greene, a pediatrician, who spells it out on his website: “Organic refers to the way agricultural products-food and fiber-are grown and processed. It is an ecological system that relies on healthy, rich soil to produce plants that resist pests and diseases. Organic farming prohibits the use of toxic and persistent chemicals in favor of innovative practices that work with nature, instead of against it, such as crop rotation, cover crop planting, beneficial insect release and composting. In the case of livestock, no antibiotics or synthetic hormones are permitted. Organic production also prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic practices mean: No pesticides to contaminate our soil and water or injure farm workers; No fertilizers to runoff and contaminate rivers, lakes and oceans; And, a healthier and more sustainable environment for us all.”

So, Why is This Issue So Important for Our Children?

The chemicals used in conventional farming are known to pose many health risks to humans, especially children. Children’s cells are literally made out of the food they eat. The nutrients and the non-nutrients, like the chemicals and artificial ingredients, are the building blocks for their cells and their cells in turn build their organs. Cells also communicate with other cells. If children’s cells are being built out of toxic chemicals, it’s easy to see how they may start talking jibberish to each other and how they may not be building the healthiest of bodies.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Children are at a greater risk for some pesticides for a number of reasons. Children’s internal organs are still developing and maturing and their enzymatic, metabolic, and immune systems may provide less natural protection than those of an adult. There are “critical periods” in human development when exposure to a toxin can permanently alter the way an individual’s biological system operates. Children may be exposed more to certain pesticides because they often eat different foods than adults.”

A study conducted by the University of Washington tracked a group of preschool children. There were 18 with organic diets and 21 with conventional diets. Their urine was analyzed for evidence of exposure to five different kinds of toxic pesticides. The researchers found that the average total was six- to almost nine-times higher for children with conventional diets than for children with organic diets.

Okay, But Why Does Organic Food Cost so Much More?

There are many reasons organic foods cost more – it is more labor intensive due to not using pesticides to protect the crops, there is more cost in creating and maintaining healthy soils that will produce nutrient-rich, healthy plants, and government subsidies offered to conventional farmers may not be available to organic farmers. Whatever the reasons, it is important to realize that while the cost may be more for the organic foods, the benefits for our families are much greater. I only have one chance to help build those bones and those hearts and those eyes, and since it took 30 years for the government to realize that DDT was responsible for so many medical problems and deaths of many children before it was banned in the US, I’m not going to leave it up to the EPA to decide what’s safe for my growing kids. I know intuitively, and I’m sure you do too, that foods that aren’t sprayed with a host of chemicals are a lot healthier for everyone, especially kids.

It becomes a matter of adjusting our spending priorities and doing the best we can to protect our children from the chemicals that are so prominent in our environment. Buying organic foods, even if it is just some of our weekly groceries, is one way we can protect our children.

Are you looking for a natural alternative to traditional medicine and expensive doctor’s visits and prescriptions? Let’s face it, we all know that here in the U.S., the cost of medical care keeps going up while the quality of care continues to decline with no solutions in sight either.

While I don’t advocate dropping your medical insurance all together, I do believe that there is a natural alternative you can use before you call your doctor and that’s natural homeopathic remedies. Natural homeopathic remedies are safe to use, highly effective, have no side effects, don’t interfere with any existing medicines or prescriptions you may need to take, and they’re cost effective too which makes them perfect for families with children.

The truth is you can start living a more natural life now by starting your own natural medicine cabinet for your home with natural homeopathic remedies which are affordable and you can easily find them at your local farmer’s market or whole foods store.

To help you get started putting together your natural medicine cabinet, I’ve put together a list of the top 5 products that you should start with and which are simply a must to have on hand in your home at all times.

1. Rescue Remedy:

The most important product you should have in your natural medicine cabinet is Rescue Remedy by Bach. Rescue Remedy is a combination of 5 Bach Flower Essences which is highly effective in treating emotional trauma or shock as in the case of acute emergencies or crises such as accidents. However, you can also use Rescue Remedy for any stressful situation which evokes stress, fear or anxiety such as upsetting bad news or an upcoming job interview. Rescue Remedy is safe to use for yourself, your children and even your pets. It’s an excellent natural product to keep on hand at all times for any type of emotional upset or trauma. Rescue Remedy will help restore you to a normal emotional balance so you can deal with the situation calmly and confidently.

2. Arnica 30C:

Another great natural product to always have in your natural medicine cabinet is Arnica 30C. Arnica (arnica Montana), is a perennial with yellow-orange flowers, that has been used medicinally for centuries by Europeans. Although there are many medicinal uses for Arnica, it is commonly known as THE number one injury remedy for sprains, bruises, muscle aches, or wounds. However, Arnica also provides quick relief from pain, shock and trauma. Arnica is proven to help the body to heal from injury as well as to reduce swelling and pain. You can find arnica in a topical ointment, salve or spray as well as in pill form to be taken internally as a homeopathic remedy.

3. Traumeel Cream:

Traumeel Cream is another amazing natural product as it is commonly known for the past 30 years as a natural pain-reliever. Traumeel, made from all natural ingredients, has been used to effectively treat sprained joints, strained or pulled muscles, bruises, arthritis, post-surgical pain, and inflammation & swelling. Traumeel is very powerful yet safe and easy to use and is generally found in an ointment or gel to be used topically. Traumeel is definitely a powerful product to keep in your natural medicine cabinet at all times for just about any minor injury.

4. Propolis:

Propolis which is a resin gathered by honeybees from tree bark and leaves, is a very powerful natural antibiotic. Dating back to ancient times, propolis was used to heal wounds, sores, and even ulcers. Propolis is commonly known today as “nature’s band aid” because it is excellent to put directly onto minor cuts or sores. Propolis with its antibiotic properties, helps heal the wound but also helps cover and protect it because propolis is water-resistant so it allows the skin to breath while it is healing from the inside out. Keep propolis in your natural medicine cabinet at all times for any minor cuts or scrapes that can and do happen as we know, often and frequently.

5. Aloe Vera:

Lastly, another must have product to keep in your natural medicine cabinet is aloe vera. The amazing medicinal and healing power of aloe vera dates back thousands of years. With its cool, soothing, anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, today aloe vera is most widely used in the healing of wounds, frostbite and burns including sunburn. Aloe vera with its ability to penetrate the layers of the skin easily and be absorbed quickly, is also a natural moisturizer and skin conditioner containing valuable vitamins and nutrients that are able to be carried to and reach the deep innermost layers of the skin, thereby healing and conditioning the skin from the inside out. Aloe vera is very effective and safe to use. Keep a jar or tube of aloe vera on hand at all time for minor burns, scarring from wounds, sunburn, insect bites, and poison ivy.

With the increase in health problems across the world, creating a healthy home has become a top priority. It is not uncommon to hear of allergies disappearing, rashes clearing up or headaches becoming a distant memory when a family takes charge of their environment. Here are 5 simple steps you can start taking today to make your house a healthy place to be. 1)Raid your pantry: If you have never thought about what you toss in your grocery cart you are in for an eye-opener. There are two big ingredients that destroy your health every time you consume them: Partially Hydrogenated Oils (trans fats) and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). If you have either of these anywhere in your house, trash them. Don’t worry about the waste factor. You wouldn’t want to pass on the “poison” to someone else. Trans fats are artery clogging fats that provide zero benefit to the body. Trans fats are created in a laboratory by adding extra hydrogens (hence the name partially hydrogented) to the existing fat molecule. This is done to extend the shelf life of food products. Monosodium Glutamate is a neurotoxin. Neuro means nerve and toxin means death. Nerve death is never a good thing primarily because your nerves cells don’t grow back!

2)Make a menu and grocery list: By making a weekly menu with corresponding grocery list you are limiting what you buy. When you walk blindly into the store you are more likely to grab what sounds good at that moment and what is most convenient. Instant gratification and convenience almost always guarantees an unhealthy choice. Choose a cookbook with healthy recipes to create your menu from. The Sonoma Diet has fresh healthy recipes and daily meal plans. A cookbook with preplanned meals is a great springboard for creating a healthy habit. Once you have created your menu of all meals for the week go through the recipes and write down the ingredients you don’t have. Making the list is the easy part. It’s sticking to it that can take some practice. Just remember if you’re shopping on the perimeter of the store your in the “healthy” zone.

3)Remove disposable diapers and disposable sanitary products: Disposable diapers contain known carcinogenic chemicals called Dioxin and Sodium Polyacrylate. Dioxin is created in the bleaching process and Sodium Polyacrylate is the gel crystals that absorb liquid in a diaper. Cloth diapers and cloth menstral pads are an economical, environmental and healthy alternative to disposable products. This transition is one of the more difficult ones. It can be confusing, overwhelming, and your mind is most likely racing with millions of faulty preconceived ideas. Reading other”s experiences and strategies on a blog like All About Cloth Diapers will set your fears and doubts to rest. With the internet today you can learn from other people’s mistakes and drastically decrease the learning curve.

4)Inspect your cleaning products: Removing harmful chemicals like bleach, sodium lauryl sulfate, 1-4, Dioxane and Propylene Glycol are positive steps towards creating a healthy environment for your family. There are many “green” cleaning products on the market today making this transition an easy one. Some alternatives include: Ecover Dish Washing Detergent, Crunchy Clean Laundry Detergent, Burt’s Bees Honey Milk Lotion, Kiss My Face Olive Oil soap, Clorox Green or Vinegar for counter tops and windows. Make a list of all the cleaning products in your house and set goals for when you will phase the unhealthy out. It may take your 3-6 months to complete the task but every step brings you closer to a healthy house.

5)Drink more water and less soda: We’ve all heard the recommendation of 8 8oz glasses of water a day at minimum or else dehydration sets in. Whether or not this recommendation is accurate, the truth is drinking water is never bad (unless you are over doing it by the gallons). Transitioning your soda intake by reducing one at a time is the best start. Sodas have many harmful chemicals in them. Aside from the High Fructose Corn Syrup that spikes your blood sugar and predisposes you to diabetes, there is Phosphoric Acid. Phosphoric Acid leaches your bones of Phosphorous causing them to be more brittle. Next time you reach for that can of Coke, grab a glass of water instead.

If you really want to green your life the best place to start is your own home. Green may well be the new “black” and not just for fashions sake, but for the earths sake. Start to green your life today by clearing out your toxic cleaning products.

The EPA estimates that indoor air is nearly 100 times more polluted than outdoor air with standard cleaning chemicals being one of the main culprits. Plant-based, biodegradable products are easier on the earth; gentler on skin, lungs and eyes and help you green your life without having to sacrifice cleaning strength.

How green, or healthy is your home? With all the things the average person has to do each day just trying to keep up with their lives who has time to think about this question much less research it. But the health of your home is critical and the cleaning products you chose make a big difference. To green your life isn’t all that hard; here are 7 easy tips to make finding good green cleaning products easier.

1. Read the ingredients. Look to see if your product is nontoxic. Nontoxic products are safe for humans and aquatic life as well. Is it biodegradable? Biodegradable products can be broken down by microbial action. The longer it takes to break down, the more harmful it is to the environment. Plant-based products are an easy way to green your life.

2. Is your product endorsed by Green Seal? Green Seal is highly regarded in the industry and provides science-based environmental certification standards for green cleaning products. Using a Green Seal endorsed product will green your life.

Some other organizations that have high standards and enforce them are; Trans Fair, Forest Stewardship Ceritfied, Greenguard, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Energy Star and Leaping Bunny.

3. Does your product contain chlorine bleach? The wastewater after using a product containing chlorine bleach can react with other chemicals, which can become toxic adding pollutants to our air and landfill. To green your life don’t use any laundry washing products that contain chlorine.

4. Is your product derived from petroleum? Petroleum-based solvents are made from nonrenewable resources, they are flammable and can be toxic when inhaled. Renewable resources such as pine oil or citrus make much better solvents for the earth and clean just as well the non-green cleaners.

5. What is your products pH balance? Neutral pH products are safer for the environment and end user. Acidic or alkaline products can burn if accidentally spilled on your skin. A pH of 7.0 is considered neutral and an excellent way to green your life.

6. Is the packaging made from recycled products? Many containers and cardboard boxes are made from “postconsumer” materials and help ease the products impact on the earth.

7. Finally, green your life with products that have not been tested on animals and contain no animal ingredients.

It doesn’t take much to make your home more earth friendly with the right green cleaning products. By deciding to green your life with more earth friendly cleaners both you and the planet benefit and that benefits us all in the end.

Still curious about how to replace your toxic household cleaners with eco friendly cleaners? Take advantage of Keith’s decade of involvement with all things green.
Are you concerned about the environment? Are you looking for way to be a little more environmentally friendly? Believe it or not the kitchen can be a great place to start with an eco-friendly household movement. For a greener home starting with your kitchen, try these great tips.

Growing and Herb Garden: Growing an indoor herb garden is a great way to start an environmentally friendly kitchen. Not only does growing your own herbs help to ensure you stay organic, but it also enhance every meal. Choose a few of your favorite spices (Basil, Thyme, Oregano, and Garlic are popular ones), get a couple clay pots, and start your garden. You’ll want to set up your plants on a windowsill where they will get plenty of sunlight. Check out your online gourmet retailers like igourmet for herb garden sets that will supply you with everything you need to start your garden.

Fair Trade Brews: If you love a morning cup of coffee, consider purchasing and brewing your own fair trade coffee. While most coffees are mass produced or made through non organic processes, fair trade products work to “fairly” compensate smaller famers for their time and product. Farmers who take part in the fair trade tradition work to utilize organic means of producing, harvesting, and selling their product. Fair Trade products aren’t limited to coffees; many gourmet retailers offer a wide selection of Fair Trade products including sugars, syrups, and teas

Take it To Go: Did you know that over two million styromfoam cups are used for a morning cup of coffee and then merely tossed into the trash. Do your part to cut down on non biodegradable waste by making your morning cup of coffee or tea and home. If you want to enjoy your warm beverage while you drive or at work, consider investing in a good travel mug may be a good idea. Making your coffee to go and taking it with you in a reusable travel mug will help you save time, money, and the environment.

Say No to Plastic: Whether your taking your lunch to work or refrigerating left over’s, consider getting rid of plastic baggies and saran wrap and replacing it with reusable Tupperware containers. Using and reusing containers will help cut back on the amount of product you waist and it will ultimately keep your sandwiches or last night’s dinner fresher longer.

Use Dish Towels and Reusable Napkins: When you’re finished washing dishes and need to wipe your hands off take a second and think about what you use. Many people use a paper towel, wipe their clean wet hands off and proceed to toss it in the garbage. A great way to cut back on paper waste and work towards and environmentally friendly kitchen is switching over to reusable napkins and hand towels. Purchase a few fancy cloth napkins for your dinner table and simply wash them after your finished using them.I’m not saying you need to get rid of those paper towel rolls all together. Sometimes they really come in handy for messes you don’t want to clean up with reusable cloths. When you do purchase paper towels, look for brands that use recycled paper to produce the towels; after all they are simply going right back into the trash.

The first thing to pop into your mind is probably, “what does he mean by healthy cooking?” What I have in mind is that healthy cooking involves the preparing of foods that not only recharge and rejuvenate the family, but will also leave them better off than they were before. This can only be accomplished thru the use of organic ingredients.

When I talk about organics, some people think that I’m just talking just about produce. That’s not true; there are now organic versions of many animal products available also.

I advocate switching to organic ingredients for your cooking because most produce is sprayed with pesticides and grown with chemical fertilizers, Animal foods can contain growth hormones and antibiotics.

The hormones can cause premature maturing of children. Also, it’s a fact that bacteria are increasingly becoming resistant to antibiotics. Scientists say that one of the reasons that bacteriia have become so resistant to antibiotics is because of all the antibiotics in our food.

Before buying organic ingredients, it’s normal for people to ask one or more of the following questions;

1) How can I replace my whole menu with organic ingredients overnight?

Won’t I pay a premium for organic ingredients?

How can I determine that an ingredient that I’m looking at is a genuine organic?

The short answer to question #1 is, “you don’t have to”. I recently read a book by Kevin Trudeau called,” Natural Cures (they don’t want you to know about)”. In it, Kevin recommends changing one ingredient of your meals at a time to organic until eventually all of your cooking is with organic ingredients. I experimeted with this technique and discovered that the my family made the transition to organics a lot more easily then I expected. So far, everything that I eat for breakfast is organic and my other meals are made up of more than half organic ingrediants.

The answer to question #2 is that unfortunately, organic ingredients usually will cost more. The number of people that buy organic products has increased, but the numbers haven’t increased enough to cause economies of scale in the production and sale of of organic ingredients.

Organic ingredients generally go for more than non-organics, but if you are willing to do some leg work, you’ll pay less than you may expect.

A good way to save money is to do as much shopping as possible at a farmer’s market. Almost every town has a seasonal farmer’s market. Some big cities even have a year round farmer’s market. Prices are lower because you are buying directly from the farmer. Usually, you can only buy fruits, vegetables, spices and eggs at these markets, but you should be able to beat the non- organic prices in the supermarkets.

Another way to get your costs down is to shop at discount chains because many of them now have organic departments. Even the big guys like Wal-Mart have jumped on the organic bandwagon.

Another sure way to cut costs of your healthy cooking is to scratch cook more often. A good example is soup. Canned soup in the store usually has a lot of salt and other non- organic ingredients. Don’t buy the package of chicken thighs. Purchase the whole chicken ( organic, of course ) and then proceed to do the honors yourself. Don’t buy the salad in the bag. Whenever possible, don’t cook your vegebles, instead steam them if you have a recipe that says that they should be cooked. Steaming them will leave in more of the vitamins and minerals than high heat cooking.

Remember, every time someone touches your food, it will cost more.

To find the answer to question #3, all we have to do is look at the label on the package in front of us. To know if an ingredient you’re looking at is organic look for the label that says, ” USDA organic “. This means that the food has been certified by the USDA as being organic in origin.

This article has been meant to show you the logical starting point in your quest to provide healthy cooking for yourself and your family. In follow up articles I shall talk about such things as more reasons why you should buy organic ingredients and how to get refined sugar out of your cooking.

Craig Stanford has done a lot of research into foods and believes that organic ingredients are the place to start for truly healthy cooking. He has assembled some of his research into the Healthy Cooking Guide. Check it out at: http://cooking-party.com/healthy

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you are rushed with work, and can’t fit lunch in? You are not alone! Everyone has them all the time, and they manage them in their own ways whether it is running to the local cafe, stopping by the vending machine, or not eating at all, however, a lot of people seem to push daily meals aside and make crazy headway on their daily errands. It is very important to not skip meals, so here are five ways to eat healthy while on the go:

1. Go for the fruit—It’s loaded with nutrients.

Fruit is a hop, skip, and a jump away from eating, say, potato chips or a chocolate bar as a quick snack. Fruit contains natural sugars that give your body raw energy. These raw sugars stimulate your brain and give you the ability to think faster and recall things quicker. Fruit also contains a lot of water. Your body is 80% water so in essence you are feeding your body with what it needs. What I personally like about fruit is that it is loaded with nutrients and is incredibly filling. Try an orange, apple, or banana, as they are great on-the-go fruits that will fill you up and travel well in your bag before you run out the door in the morning.

2. Cereal—Not just a breakfast food anymore.
While pouring your morning bowl, grab a baggie and throw in some dry cereal for a great late afternoon snack. It is important to note, choose cereals low in sugars like Life, Raisin Bran, Grape Nuts, Cheerios, etc. Dry cereal is low-calorie and is a good source of fiber (look for cereals with over three grams of fiber). Fiber fills you up and can tide you over until dinner time. If possible, select a cereal that is whole-grain as it helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

3. Crackers—Can’t go wrong here.

Crackers, although many might say they are plain, are another great snack to eat on the go before your next appointment. It doesn’t matter what kind of crackers you eat—whole grain, multi-grain, graham, or animal—all these crackers are healthy for you, in moderation. Don’t bring the whole box with you in the car, because if you are like me, the whole box will be gone before I even got home. Like cereal, grab a bag and put five or six crackers in, along with some great cheese (Cabot is my favorite) if you have it. Cheese and crackers is a great pair that provides a balanced snack for the morning or late afternoon.

4. Yogurt—Don’t forget the spoon.

Yogurt is a delicious snack that now comes in an array of flavors, with different toppings like granola and crushed Oreos. Try to avoid these toppings, as they are added fat and calories with no real nutritional benefit. Yogurt is great because it has fruit in it and it is loaded with potassium, protein, and calcium. Yogurt is also known to boost your immune system, so if you’re sick, grab some yogurt and eat away—it’s healthy for you!

5. Energy Bars—Not all of them are candy bars.

Alot of energy bars out on the market are literally candy bars—loaded with fat and unneeded calories. In looking for an energy bar, you should look for one that is all natural, meaning that is has no preservatives, which does mean a shorter shelf-life, however, that means the product is more likely to be fresh. Also, look for energy bars with a lot of protein and fiber, a healthy combination and balanced snack requirement. If you would like to know what you are eating, look for energy bars that have familiar ingredients, like ones you could find in your kitchen cabinet. Do you know what potassium pyrosulfite is? I didn’t think so. Go with what you know.

If you do choose to skip a meal, it is very important to at least have a healthy, nourishing snack to hold you over until your next meal. Try your hardest to resist the fast-food places and candy aisles at the grocery stores. It will be beneficial to you in the long run.

It sounds like a big deal, I know. Not eating for 10 days! But it wasn’t. Believe me. On the contrary, it was a wonderful, rich, and spiritual experience. In addition, I am back at my ideal weight, I have more energy, my skin is glowing, my nails are healthier, and I feel strong mentally. Well, thinking about it that way, I guess it was a big deal.

Let me tell you more about it.

I went to R.O.Y.L. Retreat. R.O.Y.L. stands for “Rest of your Life“ and it was, without a doubt.

The whole time I was under the supervision of Dr. Tosca A. Haag, a medical doctor who was raised under Natural Hygiene Law by her well-known mother in the field of Natural Hygiene, Dr. Vivian Virginia Vetrano, and her step father, Dr. Herbert M. Shelton, one of the fathers of Natural Hygiene. Dr. Tosca, as she prefers to be called, obviously knows very well about what she is talking. She was a Natural Hygienist before she was born. She has never taken medications or been vaccinated.

What is Natural Hygiene?

Natural Hygiene is a study of the science of natural living. Natural Hygiene concerns itself with supplying all of the needs of the body to regain and maintain optimum health, vibrant energy, and freedom from illness.

Natural Hygiene encourages taking in:

Pure air

Pure water

Adequate sunshine and natural light

Regular exercise

Adequate rest and sleep

A diet of whole, organically-grown foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds eaten raw

Eating foods in proper combinations for optimal digestion

Fasting

The goals of Natural Hygiene include emotional balance, freedom from addiction, high self-esteem, a purposeful life, and nurturing relationships. Natural Hygiene believes that health is something no one else can give you, nor can it be purchased at the local pharmacy, health food store or hospital. Health must be earned through self-discipline and knowledge.

My experience at the retreat was a full circle. Back in 1991, when I was searching for the perfect diet the first time, I was lucky enough to buy and read the book “Fit for Life.” At the time, my understanding was that Natural Hygiene was all about food combining and cleansing the body with the right food. I now understand that Natural Hygiene and health in general is much more comprehensive than that.

When I arrived at the retreat house, I wasn’t sure about doing a fast but after listening to Dr. Tosca, I decided to do it. So the first 10 days of my 17-day stay, I fasted. I didn’t eat at all. I DRANK ONLY WATER FOR 10 DAYS. During that time, the digestive system shut down and I was surprised to see how relatively easy it was. I wasn’t hungry. My body was using pre-digested matter: accumulated fat, cholesterol, waste, and toxins. I learned that when we eat, we use 75% of our energy for digestion. During the fast, that same energy is used to heal and repair. During those 10 days, I slept a lot. It was really the “rest of my life.” I also got what they call “Physical Healing Crises.” For example, I had 3 days of sore throat. I believe my body was healing one of my weakest spots. I also had pain in my ovaries for a couple of days, but nothing to be scared of. Finally, I had light symptoms of allergies that was nothing to compare with the painful seasonal allergies of my twenties.

I also experienced some “Emotional Healing Crises.” One afternoon, I felt pain in my chest. It was harder to breathe deeply. I was thinking: “It feels like someone is trying to strangle me.” Now, I realize that it might be related to my challenge to speak up for myself, to speak my truth.

After the fast, I had 7 days of recuperation. For the first two days, I ate 7 meals of watermelon every two hours, starting with 4oz and then 8oz. Everyday, Dr. Tosca added food to my diet. After four days, I had some avocado and the next day, I had some nuts and nut-based dressing. The whole time, the diet consisted of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, all raw. It is amazing what we can prepare with raw food and how diversified my diet was.

I have to tell you about my first bite of watermelon. It was so delicious, so juicy. After my fast, my taste buds were fully alive. I was fully alive.

During recuperation, I got another “Physical Healing Crisis.” My back and my belly got covered with a rash of fungus, something I have been fighting on and off for a long time. But this time, it wasn’t only a few spots here and there. It was pretty ugly but disappeared after three days.

I have been back from my retreat for three months and I am still having fun with new recipes. I am making yummy dressings, raw soups, raw dishes, salads, juices, and smoothies. My next experiment will be with raw desserts and raw “fake ice cream.”

Fasting is now part of my life. I will be fasting for three days this coming December with two friends who went to the same retreat after hearing about my experience. We plan to fast together four times a year for three to four days.

Five Organic Finds

The organic-food category is growing fast, and now the same concept has taken hold in the beauty industry; we love these organic* products for skin, hair and body.

The Healing Garden Organics Wild Honey body-care line ($6-$9 each; at drugstores) includes a scrub, body wash, soap and moisturizing mist–all formulated with organic wild honey to help skin retain moisture.

Avalon Organics recently overhauled its product line to eliminate the preservative parabens (the use of which has been banned in the European Union because of suspected carcinogenic effects). An herbal blend of 10 organic essential oils works as a natural preservative, keeping products–such as the Clarifying Lemon Shampoo ($8; avalonorganics.com)–fresh for up to two years.

Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Spray ($15.50; aveda.com) adds body and hold to thinner, finer hair with a blend of organic acacia gum (a natural thickening agent) and organic marshmallow root.

Collective Wellbeing Body Wash ($8; collectivewellbeing.com) contains charcoal to whisk away impurities, zinc to help reduce inflammation and the certified organic botanicals juniper berry, lemongrass and sage to cleanse.

Nature’s Gate Organics Advanced Skin Care ($25-$35; at health-food stores nationwide) is an anti-aging line of creams and serums that treats skin with grape-seed extract, soy, mulberry and bearberry.

*In order for a product to be called certified organic, it must adhere to criteria set by the National Organic Standards Board.

Natural, organic products launch into baby care space

When it comes to baby care, it is no secret that moms are drawn to products that they feel are safe and gentle enough for their little ones. This has given way to new niche brands that largely compete in the natural, organic and hypoallergenic product space, but also has prompted larger players to launch products mom can feel good about.

“The population of children in the United States, parental concern for healthy hygiene practices, fear of excessive sun exposure and the quest for convenience and fun when brushing teeth, bathing and shampooing are the primary drivers of the market,” stated a recent Mintel International Group report on the U.S. children’s personal care market.

One such example is Kimberly-Clark, which earlier this year introduced several new and improved baby and toddler hygiene products under its Huggies brand.

The new lineup includes an expansion of the Huggies bath and body toiletries line with a fresh scent infused with cucumber and green tea ingredients. The new naturally refreshing scent is available across the full line of Huggies baby wipes and toiletry products, including baby wash, shampoo, lotion and washcloths.

The company also has improved the Huggies Supreme baby wipes to offer mothers a better cleaning product with washcloth-like performance. According to the manufacturer, Huggies Supreme baby wipes are the thickest baby wipes currently on the market–50 percent thicker than branded competitive baby wipes and 30 percent thicker than current Huggies Natural Care baby wipes.

To help little ones stay safe in the sun, KimberlyClark recently launched nationwide its Huggies Little Swimmers self-adhesive, water-resistant UVB sun sensors.

The sun sensors are part of the first extension of the Huggies Little Swimmers brand, which created the disposable swimpants category in 1998.

The patented UVB sun sensors, which are offered through an exclusive partnership with SunHealth Solutions, are placed on a child’s skin or clothing and change color when it is time to take protective action, such as applying more sunscreen.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s, a leader in baby care that is known for its No More Tears formula, has developed solutions for fine/normal and wavy/curly hair types with its new 2-in-1 shampoos. Both the Johnson’s Detangling Shampoo and Johnson’s Extra Conditioning Shampoo are built on the heritage of the No More Tears formulas. The products also have a baby-fresh scent.

Given that oral hygiene is a major portion of the children’s personal care products segment, DR Products, which was founded by pediatrician Dr. Ray Wagner, has developed disposable tooth and gum-cleaning towelettes, called Spiffies, for infants and toddlers.

Spiffies contain xylitol, a natural ingredient that has been proven to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Parents can clean childrens’ teeth by wrapping the wipes, available in baby grape, baby apple and mango flavors, around their finger and rubbing it over teeth and gums.

Are you concerned about all of the toy recalls due to lead paint contamination. If you are like most people than your answer was yes. That is why it is always best to buy toys made right here in the US. You can’t really trust the supply from China, but toys made here are manufactured under strict guidelines, using the very best supplies. At simplygoodstuff.com, we only sell high quality toys that are both educational and safe.

Our Dado Cubes are a revolutionary building toy that has won several awards. It is a colorful (plastic, not painted) and clever twist on traditional building blocks. Notches in the sides of the cubes allow children to build all sorts of unique structures. They nest and interlock instead of stacking traditionally. The cubes are all different sizes and colors, so the resulting build is more like a sculpture than a pile of blocks. Your kids will play for endless hours as they learn and laugh and problem solve. Dado Cubes are made right here in America so you know they are safe. The quality and craftsmanship can’t be beat. This toy is so engaging you will find yourself playing with it just as much as your kids.

Another building toy that is new for this year is the cousin to the dado cube. Dado Squares are made by the same company, but are slightly different. The resulting structures end up to be drastically different. These are flat squares with notches on all sides. Building is much the same as with the cubes. The flat squares interlock to form three dimensional sculptures that are endless in possiblity. Both the cubes and the Dado Squares are high quality learning toys that will provide endless fun and are guaranteed to be lead paint free.

One of the funnest toys to come along in a while is the Plasma Car. This great riding toy is fun for all ages. It isn’t made in the US, but the quality is very high, and there are no painted componets on this toy. Your children will laugh and giggle as they exercise themselves to a happier and healthier self. There are no batteries, pedals or pushing involved. Kids just need to wiggle the handle back and forth to move the car forward.

So…If you are looking for high quality toys and other items for kids that are safe, effective and fun then visit simplygoodstuff.com. We don’t have everything, but if it is on our site we guarantee it to be good. When you are shopping this holiday season be sure to check out our good stuff for kids to get a high quality product that is guaranteed to be safe.

This is a great list of the most germ ridden places and things. Some of these are a little surprising, but for the most part it seems you will find the most germs in high-traffic, public places. It is important to prevent prolonged contact with these germs in order to remain healthy. This list was originally reported in Health Magazine and can be seen in full detail there. Here is the list:

Your kitchen sink

Airplane bathrooms

A load of wet laundry

Public drinking fountains

Shopping cart handles

ATM buttons

Your handbag

Playgrounds

Mats and machines at health clubs

Your bathtub

Your office phone

The hotel-room remote control

This list really makes me want to wash my hands more frequently, dry my laundry immediately, clean my whole house and stop working out at the gym. Germs can be gross, but you can take some simple steps to prevent them from ruining your day. With flu season just around the corner, washing your hands can greatly reduce your risks of getting sick. Cleaning with microfiber can be a quick and easy way to remove germs from your house. It is important to be aware, but not afraid of these germy places.

Is It Just Another Marketing Tool?

Many of you may have noticed the plethora of organic foods in the supermarkets these days. From the produce department to the frozen food section, it seems like everything is an organic food.

This is not surprising since consumers are buying more and more organic foods. The trend started small back in the 70’s when people started realizing how many preservatives and chemicals were starting to be a part of our food supply. Many organic food producers that are seeing such rapid growth today started back then. As people become older and more concerned with their health, demand for organic food is on the rise. Parents concerned about their children’s health are also demanding more organic food since even some brands of baby food have the organic label on it.

The Organic Trade Association reports that sales of organic foods have increased 20 percent in the last 5 years. A 2004 survey done by Whole Foods showed that more than ½ of Americans have tried organic foods.

More conventional food producers have noticed and they’ve left the low carb frenzy in the dust as they take on this latest marketing trend. The US government has made it easier to put organic foods on the market with regulations that define organic foods.

According to these regulations, organic food is grown without chemicals, processed without additives and no irradiation, biotechnology or sewer sludge is used. Additionally, for animals and their byproducts like dairy foods and eggs, no hormones or antibiotics are used in the rearing of the animals.

However, standards set by the US government in 2003 that made organic foods more accessible to the general public allow conventional farmers to use 200 synthetic chemicals in their version of organic foods. Thus, we see a lot more foods labeled “organic” on our shelves these days for consumers who are hungry to be healthy and willing to pay more for it.

The benefits of organic food are real. Chemicals, preservatives, pesticides and hormones in your food can do all kinds of damage to your health. But be aware of the guidelines and buy from food manufacturers that have a history of producing high quality organic foods. And it’s a good idea to shop at a supermarket that you trust when buying organic food.

Natural and Creative Toys Alternatives to Plastic

Plastic toys seem to be the most popular choice for the consumer these days as the shelves of stores are filled with them. Maybe it is time to consider some alternatives. There are many natural and creative ‘toys’ that can be found in your home and nature.

Here are some alternatives to the toxic, sometimes noisy, plastic toys that you and the kids might enjoy more:

1. Small kids like to mimic what we do. Do you ever notice how they like to play in the cabinets and explore what is in there? Why not give them a cabinet and drawer in the kitchen filled with a wooden spoon, colander, wooden bowl, pot, lid, rolling pin, towel, washcloth, broom, dustpan and a fabric shopping bag. My one year old son spends so much time playing in this space and I always put in a few surprises for him to enjoy.

2. Make a drum or other musical instrument. You can use a recycled container with a lid (yogurt, ice cream) and have an already made drum or make one out of natural materials. Drumming is a great way for kids to connect with their heart and to calm themselves too. They can start a drum circle with their friends, family and neighbors. Kids can make instruments out of sticks that they can decorate and create music. Using paper towel rolls and filling them with dried beans and covering with recycled paper with decoration…you have a shaker!

3. Build a tent out of sheets, blankets or fabric. Okay, this must be every kids all time favorite! Drape them anywhere indoors or outdoors and they have their place space.

4. Rocks, seeds and sticks are plentiful enough. Building, jewelry making, stacking, creative and imaginative play in many different ways. And do not be afraid to let the kids bring them indoors. Relax and they will have even more fun.

5. Recycled clothing can be taken apart and used to make a special one of a kind doll. This is a great opportunity for the child to recognize their creative abilities on their own or share some time with a parent making it extra special.

[ Good Stuff for Kids ]

6. Play silks are a great way to soften the atmosphere of the play area. The silks can be used for imaginative play and dress up. Speaking of dress up…

7. Have a dress up basket. Fill a basket with scarves, beads, large fabric pieces, any any other unique finds. Dress up can help to expand childrens imagination which turn in to the most amazing creative adventures.

8. Using a flannel receiving blanket, soft cloth or a recycled silk scarf, you can make a cuddly doll for a small child. Use a little stuffing for the head. You can use a sock, wool or fluff from milkweed. Then make the arms and legs out of knots.

9. Write a book. Whatever the topic of interest, creating a book is a fun way to use the imagination as well as have a fun learning experience.

10. Growing a garden can be play. Let them dig in the dirt and select what they would like to plant. Kids love to eat food they grow themselves. What a great way for a child to be empowered, by growing their own food.

There are so many natural and creative ideas that come to mind. I realize that their are times when you want to purchase a toy or give a gift. Maybe you will consider checking out some of your local natural toy makers or companies such as Magic Cabin, Nova Naturals and mother owned small businesses for healthier alternatives to the plastic toys. Allowing yourself and children to enjoy creative imaginative play is good for the body, mind and spirit. Have fun!

“Among the most exciting applications of herbal medicine lie in treating abnormalities of the immune system. Clinical studies have shown that various herbal products are effective in treating allergies, asthma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Herbal medicine also has a unique potential usefulness in balancing the immune system in cases of chronic infection, preventing the immune system from turning on the body and causing destruction.”

Phyllis A. Balch, CNC Prescription for Herbal Healing

A healthy, properly functioning immune system is absolutely vital to good health. It is the key to the healing process from the tiniest scratch – to the most complex virus. Even the aging process is intimately linked with the immune system.

Compromised immunity leaves us vulnerable to disease and impairs our ability to heal properly and age well.

SIGNS OF IMPAIRED IMMUNE FUNCTION

CANDIDIASIS/ YEAST INFECTIONS

RECURRING INFECTIONS

CHRONIC FATIGUE

LISTLESSNESS

CHRONIC DIARRHEA

SLOW WOUND HEALING

ALLERGIES

INFLAMMATION

People who have more than 2 or 3 colds or infectious illnesses per year are likely suffering from weakened immunity

WHAT IS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?

The immune system is a complex system of interactions involving many organs and glands as well as substances such as bone marrow, white blood cells, lymphatic vessels and serum factors in our blood. Our immunity dependson all these components functioning together.

HOW DOES OUR IMMUNITY BECOME IMPAIRED?

Unfortunately, modern life is full of things that tend to depress our immune systems.

PESTICIDES

CHEMICHALS IN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

FOOD ADDITIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS

OVERUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS

POOR LIVING HABITS

STRESS

IMPROPER NUTRITION

CHEMOTHERAPY

Also many disorders have been linked to improper immune function including thyroid deficiency, diabetes, rheumatic heart disease, reheumatoid arthritis, lupus and pernicious anemia.

For optimal immune function we need to address any disorders that may be inhibiting immune function. We also need to take steps to avoid exposure to toxins such as pesticides and chemicals we use around the house. Try wearing gloves when cleaning to avoid skin exposure and avoid inhaling fumes from things like bleach, oven cleaners, and the like. Make sure dishes and glassware are thouroughly rinsed of any residue from dishwashing liquids etc. Even though they’re more expensive, consider buying nontoxic cleansers. Take steps to ensure that the soaps and shampoos you use are made from the most natural ingredients possible. (Aubrey Organics is a good option.) It’s also important to get plenty of fresh air and to drink the purest water available.

HERBS THAT BENEFIT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM:

ASTRAGALUS – A powerful antioxidant which protects the liver from toxins, boosts the immune system and generates anticancer cells in the body.

ECHINACEA – Enhances lymphatic function and boosts immune system.

GINKGO BILOBA – A powerful antioxidant which increases circulation to brain cells.

GOLDENSEAL – An antibacterial which strengthens the immune system and cleanses the blood. (Don’t take internally for more than a week at a time or if pregnant.)

ST. JOHN’S WORT- A blood purifier useful in cases of Epstein – Barr virus and HIV.

OLIVE LEAF – Effective against numerous viruses, bacteria and fungi. It has been used in the treatment of people with viral illnesses such as Epstein-Barr disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Herpes and AIDS.

SPIRULINA – Aids in protecting the immune system and cleansing toxins from the body. Though technically a nutrient, not an herb, spirulina is a naturally digestible food that helps protect the immune system and aids in mineral absorption. It helps balance blood sugar levels and supplies nutrients that help the body cleanse and heal.

Other herbs that enhance the immune response are:

BAYBERRY,FENUGREEK , HAWTHORN, HOREHOUND and RED CLOVER .

Herbal Formulas
Herbs often work best when used in combination with other herbs. There are contraindications for certain herbs if you have an auto-immune disorder. Consult a good herbal book or work with an herbalist to create a blend appropriate for your needs.

CLEANSE THE LIVER

The liver is our primary detoxifying organ and must be functioning optimally for proper immunity.

Herbs which are useful in cleansing the liver include BLACK RADISH, DANDELION, and MILK THISTLE.

Other Steps to Improved Immunity

Proper Nutrition

In addition to using herbs to strengthen and balance the immune system it is important to supply the body with adequate nutrients.

Vitamin A Vital to the body’s defense system – known as the infection-fighting vitamin.

Vitamin C Probably the most important vitamin to the immune system. It has a direct effect on bacteria and viruses and is needed for forming adrenal hormones and lymphocytes.

Vitamin E Works synergystically with vitamins A & C as well the mineral selenium as a scavenger of toxic free-radicals.

Zinc Promotes healing of wounds and boosts immune response.

Germanium A trace element which benefits the immune system.

Get sufficient sleep.

Don’t Smoke

Excercise Regularly

Reduce Stress and Anxiety.

Stress triggers changes in biochemistry that suppress white blood cell activity and taxes the endocrine system in ways that ultimately result in lowered defense against infection and an impaired capacity for healing. Stress also depletes the body of nutrients. Addressing chronic stress is a very important element of bringing the immune system into balance.

Organic Gardening Organic gardening involves the utilization of materials derived from living things like compost and manure. The fertilizers contain only naturally occurring animal or plant materials with hardly any man-made chemicals or pesticides ever being used.

The fundamentals of organic gardening begin with the soil used for the process. The importance of organic gardening is laid on “feeding the soil and not the plant”. The soil contains organic matter, which serves as fertilizer providing nutrients to the plants. Organic matter consists of grass clippings, food scraps, leaves from autumn trees and ordinary trash; all of which can be converted into the perfect organic fertilizer and worked into the soil. The compost is also enriched with beneficial microorganisms and bugs both of which feed and protect the plants from disease causing microbes. All the organic gardener has to do is feed the beneficial microbes and let them do their work

Most people would find it hard to believe that cultivating a garden can be done without the benefit of modern science in the form of fertilizers and pesticides. However, this is not really true. Once you learn the ease and simplicity of organic gardening, no matter what you grow, you are bound to have a hearty and healthy patch of green.

[ Good Stuff for Your Backyard ]
Once the soil is treated with organic compost and is ready to be cultivated, the next step would be to select the plants you want to grow. The most important thing that you must remember when buying plants or seeds for your organic garden, is to select plants that are native to your area, or that can grow in your unique climactic conditions. Obviously, plants that are well suited to your climactic conditions will grow better and with less hassles than a plant that is alien to your environment. This provision will guarantee you a relatively maintenance-free gardening experience.

Although organic gardening mainly involves organic compost and manure as fertilizers, some people do use a small amount of synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. The focus however remains on using as less of it as possible. The primary aim of an organic garden is to fit it into the local environment, beginning with proper soil care and water, which provide for healthy plant growth. Organic gardening also includes insects that you can put in your garden to help with pollination and plant defense, which serves as a natural pesticide.

Organic gardening may seem to be more challenging, but in fact, all gardening is hard work with hours of dedicated caring. Organic gardening is a different type of gardening, definitely healthier and more eco friendly.

William Brister – http://www.beautifulgardens.tv – Fertilizers, composte, and manure.

There are many essential physical and psychological factors that will assist in the process of staying or becoming healthy. The most important of these have been listed in this article. It may for many people seem to be a very challenging list. If you are one of these people then I suggest that you make a start. Choose one thing that you can change about the way that you currently live. Make that change and stick to it and then make another change and so forth. If you find the list daunting then choose something relatively easy from the list to do – for example, increase the amount of filtered water that you drink in one day. This is adding something to how you live rather than taking something away. Adding in is easier than taking something away. When it comes to your diet try adding in eating one piece of fruit per day and do this for a week and then add in two pieces of fruit per day. Again you are adding in and not taking anything away. You may also be able to add in something for you mind or physical exercise. You will have made a good start.Attempting to change many things at the one time is very difficult and will make it difficult to succeed but you can make changes over many months – just keep the goal of improved health in your mind. Improved health is what you are working towards and having this in mind will help to keep you going when times get tough and you feel like giving up.

Eating a good diet and ensuring that you are obtaining your vitamins and minerals is one necessary step to good health. This means eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and taking a good vitamin and mineral supplement. If you have not been eating a good diet it is probable that you have a build up of toxins in your body. Toxins are one of the main reasons for ill health and need to be removed. You find out how to safely remove the toxins with Safe Colon Cleansing:Your Good Health Guide. Volume 2 also contains hundreds of recipes to help you eat a good diet.

Do not smoke. Tobacco has many harmful effects. If you currently smoke try to give it up. Join Growerz.com for the support and assistance that you need.

Do not drink alcohol as even in small amounts it can have a detrimental effect on the body.

Breath deeply – but in pure and not polluted air. Air Purifiers are able to assist if you live in an environment with poor air quality. They can also assist if you have a problem with allegens such as dust mites and pollens.

Drink plenty of fresh pure water.

Sunshine. Our body needs sunshine to function well and to make vitamin D. We should not get so much that we burn as this damages the skin and can lead to skin cancers. How much you need will depend upon where you live and the nature of your skin – about 10 minutes per day with about 60% skin exposure is a rough guideline.

Good posture and bones. We need to make sure that the structure that holds us together and upright is in good alignment. There are many who consider this to be the foundation of our health and that if our bony structure is right then the nerve and energy impulses that pass to the rest of the body will help to keep it in good order. if you have any difficulties with this you need to see a practitioner such as a chiropractor or osteopath or massage therapist.

Take medical drugs only if essential. Excessive use of medicinal drugs (obtained either on prescription or over the counter at a pharmacists or supermarket), can lead to serious physical ill-health. Avoid taking drugs unless there is a defined medical problem. Many pharmaceutical drugs have an adverse effect on our vitamins and minerals. Seek alternative approaches (such as naturopathy and herbalism) to managing health problems.

Take regular exercise. In order to maintain good physical health is necessary to take regular exercise. This needs to include three elements, aerobic fitness, muscular strength and flexibility. Walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, sporting activities, weights, yoga and so forth are all suitable. Choose the forms of exercise that suit your lifestyle and personal preferences. If you haven’t exercised for a while you need to start very gradually. You may also need to check with your health professional if you have had heart problems or surgery.

Take regular mental exercise. The mind affects the body in many ways and mental health is necessary to achieve physical health. Mental activities such as reading, writing, the creative arts, a hobby, learning something new, doing a different project all stimulate the mind. Watching excessive amount of TV, computer games or videos does not allow you to exercise your creativity or mental capacity.

Have and follow a goal in life. It is important that you have a goal or purpose in life that you are interested in and genuinely wish to achieve. This may be via your job or home life or by being a member of a local or national society or some other means. Without an interest in wanting to achieve something, life often becomes dull and meaningless.

Develop and maintain a range of positive, supportive relationships.

Maintain a wide range of interests and activities. Life can be divided into certain areas such as your own personal interests, your family, work and groups or societies that you belong to. Try to have interests and activities that relate to each of these areas.

Manage the levels of stress that are in your life. Learn how to relax and stay calm and have a practical and positive attitude to your abilities and life circumstances.

Remember to enjoy life. Even when you are unwell or under stress there is much enjoyment to be had. There are many activities that you can do to help you in the process of staying or becoming healthy. The list provided above is a good starting point. Try making a plan for yourself and add in things to your life before you try taking things away. However if you smoke make it a priority to quit. Not smoking is one of the greatest health improvements that you can make. Growerz.com will assist you to become smoke free.

A mist fountain is possibly the best way to purify the air in your home or office. These decorative accents are great to look at, but they also have many health benefits as well. Put one in your home to naturally remove the air of pollutants, using the negative ions generated. Add just a few drops of fragrance oil to scent the air too. No more burning candles and emitting smoke into the air. A mist fountain gives you a clean and natural way to put fragrance in the air and eliminate contaminates. Plus they look great. LED lights and innovative design make these decorative fountains extremely popular.

How does the misting fountain lamp purify the air?
The cloud of mist that is generated is negatively ionized water. It is made up of negatively charged particles that react with contaminates in the air. All of the bad stuff in your air is positively charged. This includes allergens, dust, dander, pollen, smoke, odors, etc. The mist particles (negative ions) adhere to the pollutants (positive ions) and remove them from the air. This prevents you from inhaling them, and they become heavier than the air, and fall to the ground where you can vacuum them up. Contrary to what you may think, negative ions are actually the good ones. They can alter your well-being, just like the mist created at a waterfall, the waves crashing at the beach, rainfall and even your own shower.

By using your misting lamp as an aromatherapy diffuser you also eliminate burning candles, which give off pollutants they contain from burning petroleum-based paraffin wax. You need only a tiny amount of oil to add fragrance to the room using a mist fountain. Add the fragrance oils directly to the water, but not directly on top of the mister. The aroma therapy oil will disperse immediately and within seconds the fragrance will be noticeable. The mist is an excellent carrier for the fragrance, and a little bit goes a long way. Discover a cleaner and more natural way to scent the air in your home or office. A mist fountain is quicker, safer and cleaner than candles or inscence. NOTE: Use only the lighter aromatherapy fragrance oils, not the heavier “essential” aromatherapy oils, which are too heavy to disperse. Our misting units are oil resistant, but you might need to clean the disk more often if you are using oils.

Forget playing up the environment, data increasingly shows that it’s better to stress a product’s health benefits for humans.

When the dairy cows at Horizon Organic’s farms get sick, they are treated with aspirin and massages. The cows’ feed is grown in soil that is carefully cultivated to stay rich and healthy through crop rotation, composting, and careful tilling procedures. In fact, all the farming practices on Horizon’s farms are geared toward producing dairy products “in harmony with nature.” But do consumers care? Not really, according to Clark Driftmier, vice president of marketing at Horizon, the nation’s largest organic dairy company. So, rather than emphasize the environmental aspects of organic farming in its advertising and packaging, the company more often highlights the perceived health benefits of milk and yogurt produced without pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics.

Horizon’s strategy makes a lot of sense to the folks at The Hartman Group. The Bellevue, Washington-based consulting firm’s recent studies have shown that health and wellness issues are increasingly more important in the green marketplace than environmental concerns. By shifting the focus onto health and wellness, and away from strictly environmental themes, marketers such as Horizon can vastly increase the size of their audience. “There was never a very large environmental market – there was a lot of talk, but not a lot of dollars on the table,” says Laurie Demerritt, executive vice president at The Hartman Group. In contrast, there is already a $66 billion annual market for wellness products, such as supplements and organic foods, according to Hartman research.

Demerritt is quick to point out that not all environmental shoppers have shifted their attention away from the health of the planet to their own health. But the emphasis by marketers on the well-being of consumers resonates with a larger audience than the indirect connection to health that environmental measures promise. “This is much more tangible,” says Demerritt. What’s more, the prominence of health-care issues on the national agenda has inspired more people to become increasingly aware and proactive in caring for themselves, further fueling this current trend.

This shift in the factors driving the green market has dramatically changed the way that Hartman studies consumers. Earlier surveys focused on segmenting them into unique environmental categories, with accompanying demographic patterns. More recent studies have used a gradual core-to-periphery lifestyle model, placing consumers on a scale of health and wellness activities. Hartman believes this method is more useful to marketers because it does not place consumers into strict categories of behaviors and demographics. So, while the environmental segmentation can still be helpful for some marketers, those wishing to reach the much larger health and wellness market are better served by the lifestyle model.

Back in 1996 and in 1998 Hartman did place consumers into six categories, each with varying levels of environmental concern and consumer behavior. This segmentation system found one group – the True Naturals – which actively tried to help the environment through its purchase behavior. While this group increased from 7 percent of the population in 1996, to 11 percent in 1998, it remained a limited market. The other three environmentally-inclined segments (New Green Mainstream, Affluent Healers, and Young Recyclers) which made up an additional 42 percent of the public in 1998, have not lived up to their potential as green consumers. “People said they were interested in ecological products, and said they were willing to pay more, but we haven’t seen that in the sales,” says Demerritt.

In the new core-to-periphery model used last year in several Hartman studies, consumers were classified on a scale which measured the level of their health and wellness lifestyles. If the consumer market were a sphere, those most involved in such lifestyles would be at the core, and those least involved would be at the periphery. In the September 2000 Wellness Lifestyle Shopper Study, 14 percent of U.S. households were classified as core wellness shoppers, meaning they had high levels of dietary supplement purchases, organic and natural food consumption, and healthy lifestyle traits, such as regular exercise. Fifty-five percent were mid-level, and 30 percent were at the periphery. Hartman believes the large market of core and mid-level wellness consumers are ripe targets for marketers who can highlight the health benefits of their products or services. And even consumers at the periphery can be wooed by marketers who understand what those consumers are looking for.

One group taking full advantage of this trend is the organic food and beverage industry, which is growing by 15 percent to 20 percent a year. While the organic farming process was originally designed with benefits to the ecosystem in mind, consumers tend to buy such products because they think it’s better for them. In their Fall 2000 Organic Lifestyle Shopper Study, Hartman found that 66 percent of organic food purchasers are motivated by health and nutrition factors, while 26 percent are motivated by environmental factors.

The Organic Lifestyle Study also identifies 6 percent of the public as core organic consumers, 35 percent as mid-level, and 59 percent as periphery. More importantly, the study shows marketers which “dimensions,” or attributes, of organic products are most important to the different types of consumers. Core consumers are most concerned with the authenticity and community benefits (e.g. environmental impact) of the product. Mid-level consumers care more about the experience (e.g. retail setting) and expert opinion (e.g. feeling that doctors or media figures endorse a product). Periphery consumers are looking for convenience and comparability (e.g. it looks as robust as the non-organic version). All three groups are attracted to the internal benefits of organics (e.g. health and well-being).

Depending on the product, and which group a marketer was targeting, the advertising, packaging, retail presentation, and information presented could be altered. “There are 20 different things I could say that are positive about organics,” says Horizon’s Driftmier. “But the message that appeals to core organic consumers might not appeal to periphery customers, and those are the segments we need to reach to keep on growing.”

As Hartman’s studies would suggest, Horizon’s health-oriented approach, availability in supermarkets, and competitive prices, seem to be working. Company revenue has grown 50 percent to 100 percent each year for the past nine years. The cows are earning those massages.

In order to support a healthy lifestyle, one must think about more than eating right, regular exercise and taking vitamin supplements. A healthy body needs a healthy home to give it the all-around support that complements a healthy lifestyle – and choosing green cleaning products can help.Using harsh chemicals to clean contributes to unhealthy air in the home, not to mention a mixture of dangerous chemicals ending up in the septic system or the city sewage system. Increasing importance is being made of using green cleaning products because of the concerns over the health of our Earth. But, people need to realize starting their environmental efforts at home is the best way to make a significant difference toward establishing a healthy lifestyle. Different types of natural products often work better than harsh chemical cleansers and by doing so naturally, the environment will stay green longer. Thus the reason green cleaning is becoming so popular for those committed to a healthy lifestyle.

Many of the more effective green cleaning products that contribute to a healthy lifestyle are those made with enzymes and bacteria that safely and effectively remove organic stains and odors. Grass, berry juices, blood and wine are perfect examples of organic stains that are difficult to remove. Besides working on stains, using all-natural enzymatic cleaners can actually break down organic odor-producing molecules. These types of green cleaning products work on stains and odors by attaching to the contaminant and breaking it into two separate molecules, and therefore changing its chemical structure. The stain or odor molecule is degraded and no longer has the characteristics that made it a stain or an odor.

Enzymatic cleaners have unlimited uses for supporting a healthy lifestyle, from removing odors caused by smoke, restrooms, trashcans, litter boxes, nursery pails, kennels, etc. to removing stains, and all without dangerous chemicals. The benefits of these green cleaning products are obvious and include not having toxic odors in the house from cleaning chemicals that are dangerous to inhale as well as to have on your skin or in your eyes. Also, you are keeping your septic system in better shape as well as your pipes that lead to it. More importantly, you don’t have to worry about residue from harsh cleansers affecting your healthy lifestyle, or that of your family or pets.

Other enzyme green cleaning products can be used specifically to break down the waste in septic systems. For those people who have a septic tank in their yard, if they have ever had to have it pumped, they know how expensive and frustrating it can be. Using a waste degrader that not only uses enzymes, but living bacteria, is a safe and extremely effective way to consume liquefied waste, converting it into inert compounds like water, carbon dioxide, and minimal solids, and protecting one’s healthy lifestyle. Organic wastes are things like cooking oils and grease, body oils that come off in the shower or bath, and sewage from bathrooms. Biodegrading this waste is a simple, safe and cost effective way to prevent septic tank and drain field problems from arising.

Also, what can you do about antifreeze, transmission oil, power steering fluid, and motor oil leaks on your driveway and garage floor? The typical cleaning solvents that are used are harsh, highly alkaline soaps and hydrocarbon-based cleaners that are not compatible with a healthy lifestyle. These solvents are toxic to humans, and once the leak is cleaned up, the toxin-soaked rags are pitched into a waste can or bagged for disposal in a landfill. In effect then, the problem is being transferred initially to a different location in your home (hold your breath!), only later to be deposited in a landfill at great long-term expense to the public. Enzyme and bacterial green cleaning products offer a solution to degrade the automotive fluids safely and effectively. The problem is solved (or “dissolved and degraded”) at home and can be washed away with a little normal dish detergent and water.

Green cleaning products using enzymes can also be used in pools and spas. They emulsify and digest skin oils, suntan lotions and other organic contaminants, keeping the water clear and eliminating the host environment or substrate that would allow the algae to grow. Using enzymes in this way enhances a healthy lifestyle by reducing the amount of chemicals, such as chlorine, needed to keep the water clean and in turn helps to diminish the side effects of using those chemicals such as stinging, watery eyes and itchy dry skin. Plus, the use of an enzyme-based green cleaning routine assists in keeping the filter lines clear and by following this green approach can save the consumer money and time.

Another use for a green cleaning system involving enzymes and bacteria that isn’t commonly known is as soil conditioners for lawns and gardens. Using fertilizers yearly is, simply put, a waste of time and money – and can impact a healthy lifestyle in a negative way. This is not to mention the run-off that goes into the streams, rivers and lakes that supply drinking water. By using a soil conditioner (enzymes and surfactants derived from bacteria), you can aerate and oxygenate the soil in turn, breaking down the complex nutrients, feeding the plants and grass by making the nutrients easily assimilated by the roots.

Enzymes are created naturally in the human body, animals, plants, and bacteria. Nature has been using them for billions of years, and now we know how effective and safe they can be for our day-to-day lives. So the next time you are shopping, take the time to read some labels and educate yourself about safe, natural cleaning products. With so many ‘green cleaning’ products becoming available, you are sure to find what you need to complement your healthy lifestyle.

When it comes to nutrition-packed foods, Mother Nature has produced them in so much abundance that it gets difficult to pick one and leave out another in the top 5 list. It is, therefore, only more fair to talk of super food categories rather than individual foods. Here are the top 5 nutrition-packed foods that you must include in your daily diet in order to lead a healthy long life:

1) Whole grains
Grains serve as the main source of carbohydrates in our diet, but most of their other nutrients are lost when they are refined and polished to remove their outer skin in order to enhance their taste.
In addition to vitamins B & E and cholesterol-mopping soluble fiber, whole grains (i.e., grains with bran, germ and endosperm intact) contain valuable antioxidants that may not be found even in fruits and vegetables. They also contain minerals like magnesium and iron. The soluble fiber present in whole grains helps reduce cholesterol level, blood pressure and blood coagulation. Their antioxidants have been found to reduce the risks to many types of cancer. Whole grains like wheat, oats, corn and brown rice should be made a part of your routine diet.

2) Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are Nature’s greatest gift to mankind, especially the dark-colored fruits and vegetables. In addition to being fat-free, low-sodium, low-calorie and delicious, they are packed with disease-fighting and health-promoting key nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and flavanoids. These nutrients help fight obesity, hypertension and cholesterol, enhance immunity, and reduce the risk to many types of cancers too because of the presence of a variety of powerful antioxidants. For example, the lycopene in tomatoes is known to help reduce the risk to prostrate cancer.

The high fiber content of fruits and vegetables helps keep your intestines clean, preventing a whole lot of gastrointestinal problems. Make sure to eat 6-8 servings of a variety of differently colored fresh fruits and vegetables like oranges, blueberries, pomegranate, papaya, mangoes, apples, grapefruit, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, carrots – the list seems endless.

3) Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are among the top-five most wholesome and nutrition-packed foods. Besides being rich in plant proteins, heart-friendly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils, and essential fatty acids like omega-3 fatty acids, nuts contain a host of valuable nutrients, such as vitamins A, E and folate, trace minerals like magnesium, selenium, copper, zinc and phosphorus, antioxidants, and a whole lot of fiber. They help fight cardiovascular diseases, and because of their low sugar content are suitable for diabetics too. Their omega-3 fatty acids and other antioxidants make nuts very effective in reducing the risk to age-related degenerative disorders. Consuming a small handful of nuts like almonds, walnuts, peanuts, cashew, etc., at least 3-4 times a week goes a long way in making you live disease-free even in old age.

4) Beans, lentils, legumes and pulses
Kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, black-eyed peas, and pulses like green moong – being low-fat, high-fiber, zero-cholesterol, and high in plant proteins – make ideal vegetarian substitutes for meat products, which are almost invariably high in artery-clogging saturated fats and cholesterol. Their nutritive value, especially their vitamins content, is further enhanced when they are consumed in sprouted form; sprouting also makes them more easily digestible.

5) Probiotic foods
Probiotics refer to dairy products (e.g., yogurt and yogurt-based desserts) cultured with a variety of gut-friendly bacteria that aid digestion, help manufacture fat-metabolizing B vitamins, and reduce gas-producing and ulcer-producing acidic conditions in the stomach. Since digestive disorders can give rise to a whole range of diseases, inclusion of probiotics in your daily diet is considered prudent. These benefits come in addition to the known nutritive benefits of low-fat dairy products.

These are some of the top nutrition-packed foods. Others that fall in the same category of super foods but have not been covered here are green tea, tofu (soy protein), cold-water fish like salmon, and olive oil.

Environmentally conscious shoppers don’t want their families, friends, or pets exposed to harmful substances. But let’s face it: Harsh chemicals are found in many of today’s popular, older-style cleaning products. Those chemicals invariably come into contact with people, while their bit of pollution to the environment. Fortunately, there are alternatives.

The markets for natural cleaning products has taken off in recent years, with more — and more environmentally safe — product offerings now available in enlightened stores. The surge in their popularity shows that an increasing number of consumers are concerned about the potentially dangerous ingredients found in the traditional product category.

Debra Lynn Dadd, author of Home Safe Home (J.P. Tarcher, 1997) and other natural-living titles, says there has been a definite increase in the popularity of natural products since 1982, when she began her career as a consumer advocate.

“I was writing about natural products before the natural products movement,” says Dadd, [but] “there weren’t a lot of cleaning products we could recommend. Now all that’s changed.”

MeMe Davis, a health and beauty sales associate for Ellwood Thompson’s Natural Market in Richmond, Va., recommends natural cleaning products to customers because she uses them herself. The reason? “You’re not ingesting a lot of chemicals,” she says. Davis also employs green products in her laundry room. “What you put on your clothes eventually ends up in your body.”

Natural cleaning products are finding broad acceptance, Davis notes, as more people become aware that alternatives to Big Soap are safer and just as effective. “They’re not just for hippies anymore.”
