QUESTION:
FAQ talks about sweeping up pet hair. What about long human hair in carpets. It ruins roller heads on vacuum cleaners.

ANSWER:
Absolutely. This broom is great for any kind of hair, and on virtually any surface. It is especially good at pulling hair out of carpet. We sell many many of these brooms to hair salons, kennels and groomers because they work so well on hair. If you are trying to remove long hair in your carpet you would want to use short deliberate strokes. This will build up a static charge that will pull the hair up and out of the fibers. The Sweepa Rubber Broom works so well that you can actually pull out hair that even the best vacuums leave behind. This broom is best used as a pull broom on carpet, so you will want to use short even strokes to pull the hair towards you and out of the carpet. You will notice that the hair doesn’t fly all over the place because it is statically charged. As you sweep, the pile of hair in front of the broom will grow and grow as you quickly and effectively remove those pesky long hairs. The best part about it though is that it will also outperform your regular broom for normal tasks too. Use it on any hard surface to thoroughly clean with less effort, and eliminate dust and hair from flying all over the place. It is also virtually indestructible and it doesn’t ware out. This high quality broom will last for years.

QUESTION:
I wish to clean my two leather couches entirely. They have accumulated a light soiling along with a disagreeable odor (probably from body oils). The color is a light tan and is about 5yrs. in age. Your product intrigues me because of it’s ease of use. Never having cleaned “leather” before makes me alittle uncomfortable but am willing to try. They measure 94″ and 72″ respectively and are heavily padded. I would prefer to use the liquid Quick and Brite. Please let me know how much to purchase and how to go about this. Thank you in advance.

ANSWER:
You should be fine with either version, but the paste will always be better for tougher cleaning jobs. The main thing with leather is to keep it as dry as possible while cleaning it, because water alone can leave staining. This is another reason why the paste might be easier overall. If using the liquid, a single 64 oz container would be more than enough. If you go with the paste, the 30 oz size would be plenty. Regardless of which version you use, the application is very similar. Basically you will want to apply a small amount of the cleaner directly onto the areas you wish to clean. This can be done with a sponge, a cloth, your hand, or something more abrasive like a brush. What you might want to use will vary depending on the exact surface and type of soil. As you apply the cleaner you will want to sort of work it into the stain. After that just let it sit there for a few minutes to give the Quick’n Brite time to work and break up the staining. After it sits, take a dry terry cloth towel to buff the couch clean. You will see all of the dirt and grime transfer to the towel, and you couch will be left clean and conditioned. You may have to apply the cleaner again to the most dirty areas, but one application should be sufficient for most areas. It is also easier if you do sections of the couch at a time. Do not try to apply cleaner to the whole couch at once because it will make the job harder, and could lead to more problems. If used correctly Quick’n Brite is extremely effective for cleaning leather. It is safe for all surface types and colors, and for the most part, you don’t have to worry about it ruining any surface you use it on. This all natural cleaner has the unique ability to deep clean your leather couch and condition it at the same time. Not only will you achieve a cleaner surface, but the material will feel nice and soft to the touch when you are finished.

You know how it happens…Your two-year-old is coloring quietly and you are thinking to yourself what a great job he is doing. You look away for a second or three to do something else only to turn your attention back and find that he has switched from drawing on the large white board he is allowed to use, to destroying the nice wood chair sitting next to it. Dry erase marker wipes nicely from those white boards, but if it gets anywhere else it can be a real pain to remove. It becomes even harder when it is on a surface like wood because you are left questioning the correct method and cleaner to use. Do you use the cleaner that you know will work on the marker only to damage the chair, or do you use something safe for the chair only to have the stain sit there and laugh at you? This can be a tough decision to makeand most people will choose the wrong thing or go through extensive effort to remove a mark like this.

In the picture above we have shown in three easy steps how a mess like this can be cleaned easily. It could be on a chair like it is here, but this same technique would also work for dry erase marker on a door, on a dresser, on carpeting and more. It is also a safe and effective method for removing dry erase marker from children’s skin and clothing too. Sure it would be easier to just let them color with crayons, but what fun is that. Kids love to draw with markers, and when you no longer have to worry about cleaning it off of unauthorized surfaces it is not such a big deal anymore.

The cleaner that was used to eliminate this mess was Quick’n Brite. It is an all natural cleaner that is extremely effective, yet totally safe at the same time. We had a quart spray bottle with just 3 tablespoons of the cleaner and the rest water. This is just pennies worth of the cleaner, so it is also a very economical solution too.

Simply spray this all purpose spray onto the chair or other surface effected and let it sit for like 30 seconds. Once it is allowed to sit, take a clean paper towel or terry cloth towel and wipe the area clean. If it is a darker color, or slightly more force was used to put it there, you may need a second application to completely remove it. Quick’n Brite is an enzyme cleaner, so once you spray it on, it begins to break apart the marker and lift it off the surface. This makes scrubbing unessesarry, and allows you to easily remove the stain. It would work the same on any other hard surfaces like doors, walls, dressers, tables and more. If the dry erase marker was on carpet, it will take slightly more effort. You will need more cleaner and it will need to be worked into the carpert fibers a bit using your hand or a brush or something. Let it sit there slightly longer too. On this type of surface, the paste version, full strength, may give better results if the all purpose spray is not achieving desired results. The paste can be used on any surface where the staining is more severe or being stubborn.

PLEASE NOTE: This will not work for permanent inks or dyes like those thick black magic markers. It will work on dry erase marker, ball point pen ink, finger paints, colored pencil, crayons, water colors, acrylics, pastels and more.

QUESTION:
I need to remove old rubber left on the bath floor from an old bath mat. will this(Quick’n Brite) cope or do you have anything else that will do the job?

Thanks, Mike

ANSWER:
There is a very good chance that Quick’n Brite will work for this type of job. It is known for removing gum, tar, wax and that sticky stuff left behind by stickers. What you want to clean sounds similar. The best way to go about it would be to use the paste full strength. Apply it to the build-up and let it sit for a while(about 10 minutes). Come back with a scrub brush or something slightly abrasive that is safe to use on your bathroom floor. Work the cleaner into the rubber a little bit and then let it sit for a little while longer(10 more minutes). This time when you come back, use the brush to loosen it the rest of the way, and then a clean terry cloth towel to wipe it up completely. It may take a second application to completely remove all signs of stickiness, but this method should work. PLEASE NOTE: The most important steps are the ones where you let the cleaner sit. It is a natural enzyme, so it takes time to work, but if applied correctly and allowed time to work, it should give good results on this type of job.

Do what? you might ask. Swooz it we would say. So what the heck does that mean? Well…Swoozing is an easy way to clean all over using a clever new cleaning tool, the Swooz. It is a little like a broom, a little like a mop, and also kind of a duster. The Swooz can be used effectively to do all sorts of jobs thanks to its’ unique design. Use it to dust, mop, sweep, wash your car, remove cobwebs, wash windows and more. It bends, reaches and conforms to clean any surface with a high quality chenille microfiber pad. This pad can be used wet or dry and does not require any sort of cleaner in addition to it. Just wet with water to clean 99% of all dirt dust and germs quickly and easily, which makes the Swooz a good choice for environmentally conscious consumers. The long fingers on the pad provide increased surface area to pick up more dirt without rinsing or changing it. The advanced microfiber material is able to skim surfaces with millions of tiny wedges to lift up and lock in dirt and build-up, yet never scratch or harm it. It is the pad doing the cleaning, so additional spray cleaners and chemicals are just not necessary.

The best part about the Swooz is the unique head. It is a diamond shape, and constructed from a solid piece of molded rubber. This natural rubber is incredibly durable and super flexible. This aspect allows the Swooz to fit between spaces and conform to uneven surfaces. It also allows the head to pivot and bend to any angle. There is hardly a place that the Swooz can’t clean. It also comes with a commercial grade handle that is telescopic. Simply twist to set the handle to the perfect length for the job you are doing. The long length will allow you to clean under the bed, get high up corners, or just comfortably clean your hardwood floors. The high quality head is totally washable and reusable. It can be machine washed hundreds of times before it needs to be replaced. This clever cleaning tool will take the place of all those disposable swiffing, sweeping and dusting products you are currently using. It is incredibly easy to clean with, and has so many uses you will constantly find new ways to Swooz.

Take your Swooz outside to wash your car. It allows you to easily clean the tops of trucks and vans, and thanks to the long reach, you will also be able to wash your car faster than ever. The soft, yet effective head will never scratch your paint, and its flexibility will allow it to mold to the shape of your vehicle and clean every surface, even underneath, without bending or reaching. Bring the Swooz back inside to dust baseboards and crown molding. Extend the pole to remove cobwebs from vaulted ceilings or dust high shelves and ceiling fans. Got a spill on your kitchen floor? Bust out the Swooz and quickly soak up the liquid as you clean your floor. The chenille pad is super absorbent, and can hold up to 10 times it’s weight in liquid. Swooz your hardwood floors and it will polish as it dusts and sweeps clean the surface. Use it with just a little bit of water for an effective low water cleaning method that is safe for all wood floors. You can even Swooz your windows and miirors. It is great to get the outside windows and glass doors. You will find it to be a quick and easy way to clean those hard-to-reach areas.

Add the Swooz to your cleaning arsenal today, and start discovering all of the ways you can use it. It is a super flexible and ridiculously versatile cleaning tool. High quality materials and a clever design ensure that it will be used a lot and last for years. So next time you have a big cleaning job to do…Don’t just clean it. Swooz it.

Spring and summer are great. The warmer days bring people outdoors to work in the garden, mow the lawn, or partake in other outdoor fun. You will find your kids playing football, tag, or just hunting for bugs on the ground. With all of this outdoor activity, one thing is inevitable though. Grass Stains. Whether it is on your shoes from walking behind the lawn mower or on your children’spants from scuffing their knees, grass stains are just another part of this time of year. We have all had white sneakers turn green or our favorite jeans seemingly ruined by the bright green color of freshly cut grass. If you have children, you know that they can get a stain on just about any piece of clothing, and on any part of their body. This green streak looks aweful unless it is removed, but like any stain, there is a right and a wrong way to clean it. If you use the wrong technique you may make the stain worse or inadvertently prevent it from ever being removed.

The lovely green color of a grass stain is caused by all of the chlorophyll in the plant. There are also proteins and other organic matter that combine to create what is considered to be a pretty tough stain to remove. Technically it is referred to as a dye stain, which means that if you don’t use the right tool for removal, a grass stain could become permanent.

You may not be able to stop grass stains from showing up, but you can effectively remove them once they arrive. You don’t have to use anything crazy either, or go through any hard steps to do it. This is one of the jobs that Quick’n Brite is really good at. It doesn’t matter if the stain is on your shoes or your clothes. It can be vinyl, leather, cotton, jeans, a t-shirt or virtually any other surface. Quick’n Brite will easily remove this type of staining in just minutes. It literally took less than 60 seconds to achieve the results in the picture above. Once the cleaner is applied, it goes to work quickly to break apart this type of organic staining so that it is easily removed. In order to clean the shoe in the picture(which was professionally dirtied by a two-year-old I might add) we took a small amount of the concentrated paste. It was applied using a damp scrub sponge in a circular motion. Once applied the shoe was wiped clean with a terry cloth towel. Just one application achieved the results pictured. For an even cleaner shoe, we could have just gone over it one more time using the exact same technique to completely remove any signs of the stain.

What if it was on my clothes?
Great question. If a grass stain was on your clothing you could tackle it one of two ways. You can either use Quick’n Brite as a pre-treater, or you could clean your jeans much like we described for the shoe.

Pre-Treat - As a pre-treater Quick’n Brite works great. Just apply some of the paste to the stain and let it sit until you are ready to wash it. You can either scratch it in using your fingernail, or apply the cleaner wish a brush or sponge. For larger areas, you could add the cleaner to a bucket of hot water, and let the clothing soak overnight. While the Quick’n Brite is on the stain it is working. It will cause the stain to loosen and lift off the surface. Once you put it in the wash, the grass stain or other build-up will wash out nicely.

Standard Stain Removal- If you just want to clean the stain right away use a method similar to the one we used on the shoes. This method is always more thorough, and can be more effective on tougher stains. For extreme stains you might want to try a combination of both methods, but in most cases this would be completely unnecessary. So, to clean your grass stain off your jeans, dampen the area with water, or by spraying a light solution of Quick’n Brite mixed with water. Once damp, apply the paste full strength to the effected areas. Work the cleaner into the stain using a brush or your fingernail, and then wipe the area clean using a dry terry cloth towel. You will notice that the stain will transfer from your pants to the towel and turn it nice and green. Depending upon severity of your stain, you may need to reapply the cleaner, but using this technique, one can easily remove any type of grass stain in minutes. The process is quick and easy.

Quick’n Brite is an all natural cleaner that is 100% biodegradable. It is totally safe for use around children and pets, and can be used for hundreds of jobs all over your home, office or vehicle. Despite it being ridiculously safe and natural, Quick’n Brite is one of the toughest cleaners you will ever use, and most people find that it outperforms what they are currently using. Try this cleaner to remove a grass stain, then use it to clean everything else too. You actually end up saving moneywhen you switch to Quick’n Brite because it is a concentrated cleaner. It works great on tub and tile, laundry stains, carpet shampooing, oil stains, grease stains, kitchen cabinets and so much more. Almost any surface, stain or mess is safe to use this cleaner on. It is so easy to use, and the results are extraordinary.

By now you have all probably seen the Shamwow infomercial on TV. They make some pretty unbelievable claims, but some of them are actually true. Specifically the claim about using less paper towels, and therefore helping the environment in the process.

Our Super Shammy is the original product, and is a heavier weight, and higher quality material than what is sold on TV. It will work better and last longer than any other similar product on the market, including the infamous Shamwow. One of the best things about the Shammys is that they really can enable you to be a little bit greener at home. We all spend a lot of money on paper towels, and using a Shammy instead can be easier, faster and most importantly, cheaper. You will also get the added benefit of not using a paper product that will just be thrown away when you are done. With Shammys around, you can all but eliminate your need for paper towels. They can be washed hundreds of times before wearing out, and if they aren’t dirty, just wring out, and let hang dry.

Did you know that paper products comprise the majority of the waste in the United States? A lot of the blame should be given to paper towels because they are grossly overused and rarely recycled. This is why stopping using them can make such a difference. Most people go through many more rolls than you might think, and 99% of them end up right in the trash can. This is why we recommend the use of Super Shammys as one of the easiest ways to go green. If you are just getting started, this is a simple baby step in the right direction. Super Shammys are not hard to use and require no special steps, ingredients or knowledge. Avoid paper towels altogether by using Super Shammys instead. These towels work like magic and they are capable of absorbing up to 20 times their weight in liquid.

With a low cost of less than twenty dollars, and nothing more to buy ever, it is a pretty inexpensive way to be more environmentally conscious. The technology behind these magical towels comes from Germany, and the material is created with ultra-porous polymers that optimize absorbency. Our Super Shammy is made from 100% Viscose Rayon and is a heavy duty 260 gsm cloth. This viscose material is what makes the Shammy almost like a sponge cloth, and allows it to literally suck liquid from virtually any surface. This is why they can be used to clean up messy spills such as red wine, cola, punch, etc. in record time, and without leaving behind a stain. They are also great for cars, boats RVs and more. People with puppies or small children should not be without a supply of Shammys on hand. They are better for the earth, and make cleaning up unexpected messes so much easier.

The Super Shammy technology is good for the environment because it replaces paper towels, which are the source for a large amount of waste in this country. Go green and start living a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Order your Super Shammys today!

They can get really nasty, and if you haven’t cleaned yours in a while, you can guarantee that you will notice a difference. Sometimes it is next to where you put your shoes on, or in the kids play room, but everyone has a place in their home that is prone to this type of mess. It is one of those jobs though that can be hard to clean, and the proper tool is not really clear. Most traditional sprays and wipes will also remove the paint from your walls, or nothing at all. It seems like if it works, it works too well, and if not, it is completely useless. Traditional methods will leave you skipping the job or ending up with mediocre results.

Our walls are always visible, so it can really make a real impact if you have nice clean walls, free of dirt and grime. The whole room starts to look better right away, and it will seem brighter and less cluttered just by wiping the walls clean of this build-up.

So what is the easier way to clean walls of this dirt? A multipurpose microfiber cloth. This is not only an effective tool, but it also allows you to clean without chemicals. It is the green way to clean those nasty smudges and marks quickly and easily. No sprays or chemicals are needed, just a high quality cloth and ordinary tap water. You will be able to wipe your walls clean in minutes, with very little effort. This unique cloth practically does the job for you as it skims the surface of your walls, lifting off dirt, and locking it in the fibers. Fingerprints, smudges, dirt, and more will be removed with ease. Once your walls are clean, you can continue on, using the same cloth to clean and polish furniture, dust shelves, clean windows and mirrors and more. Each surface will be left extremely clean, streak free and polished.

How To Use It:
Simply get the cloth wet under warm water, and then wring it out until the it is just damp. Then wipe the dirty surface to remove dirt and thoroughly clean. You can rinse as you work to replenish the cloth, and once you are all done, just through it in the wash to be laundered. These great cloths can be washed hundreds of times before they need to be replaced, so it is also a very economical solution to your dirt as well.

At simplygoodstuff.com, we carry the highest quality microfiber products available. This means that they will clean better, and last longer than similar products on the market.

It is surprising how many people in today’s era of information are still not aware that our households are full of toxic chemicals. Despite this, thousands are switching over to safer products and this is why.

“Since 1950 at least 70,000 new chemical compounds have been invented and dispersed into our environment. Only a fraction of these have been tested for human toxicity.”

“We are by default, conducting a massive clinical toxicology trial, and our children and their children are the experimental animals.”
Herbert L. Needleman, M.D., Philip J. Landrigan, M.D. Raising Children Toxic Free

It is alarming, the information about safety of products and the lack of labelling required for these products.

“Of the 70,000 chemical compounds, only 25% have been tested – and they were tested individually. Chemicals do not occur individually in our body, they occur in combinations.Tiny amounts of only 2 toxic chemicals at the same time are 1,000 times more dangerous than 1 of them alone.” The Center of Bio Environmental Research
[Green Cleaning Supplies]

Are they in our homes?
Sadly, yes they are. “The nation’s worst pollution is found inside our homes. A 15 – year study has shown American homes have chemical levels 70 times higher than outside. The number of chemicals used inside the home has more than doubled since 1950.” The EPA, Environment Protection Agency

It is of importance to note that the following is only a small glimpse of the products containing these chemicals. These would include dishwashing detergents, household cleaners, disinfectants, furniture polish, air fresheners, fabric softeners, bleach products, mold/mildew cleaners and shampoos.

We become poisoned by ingestion, inhalation and absorption through the skin. ? “Some products release contaminants into the air right away, others do so gradually over a long period of time. Some stay in the air up to a year.” American Lung Association

All of this results in poor health and less vitality than we would normally have in a fresh, unaltered environment. “50% of all illness is due to poor indoor air quality” 1989 State of Massachusetts Study. The red flags of this toxic crisis are staggering. One person in three has allergies severe enough to be treated by a doctor. One person in ten suffers from migraine headaches or high blood pressure. One in five families have a member suffering from mental health concerns. “70% of cancers are triggered by exposure to hazardous substances in our environment” Toxic Substances Strategy Committee. Shockingly, One in every two now get cancer. “Women who work in the home have a 55% higher death rate from cancer than women who work outside the home.” 17-year EPA Study. “Asthma rate has tripled in the last 20 years.” “Incidence of lung cancer has increased 364% despite the fact that smoking has declined in the general population.” National Cancer Institute.

There is so much more. We have not even touched on how these chemicals effect children or pets who are much more vulnerable.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
“Damage to organs caused by environmental chemicals frequently cannot be repaired or corrected once they injury has occurred. PREVENTION, is therefore essential.” Herbert L. Needleman, M.D., Philip J. Landrigan, M.D., Raising Children Toxic Free.

“Just by reducing (not eliminating) environmental carcinogens alone, we would save at least 50,000 lives taken annually by cancer.” Dr. Lee Davis, former advisor to the Secretary of Health

This is what has consumers, such as myself switching to healthier, safer cleaning and personal care products. “Green cleaning” is not a new concept. People have been making their own cleaners for years. Typically they have used ingredients such as vinegar or baking soda. But in the last several years, some commercial brands have appeared on the shelves, websites and through mail order. I typically buy everything from streak free glass cleaner, to toilet bowl cleaner from a wholesale, mail order company where you can order on the phone or online. There are other brands as well such as ecover, Quick’n Brite and Seventh Generation. All of these tend to be better than the home “recipes” as they typically clean much better and can sanitize. These cleaners are formulated with surfactants which can remove grease and oil, mildew and mold. If you are not having your products delivered to your door, you sometimes need to search for them or get them at a few different stores, but they are available. You may need to go to your local health food store.

It’s all about reducing as many toxins as you can. Prevention is the key. When I can feel confident cleaning my oven with my baby right beside me, I know I’m doing a good thing for all of us.

What is it about nice clean walls that makes children want to draw all over them. It seems like no matter how many sheets of paper or coloring books are offered, some amount of crayon always makes it’s way on to the walls. Even though we cherish every piece of art created by our little ones, we could all do without the drawings that dirty our walls. This type of mess can be a total disaster, and many people find it hard to clean. Luckily this is one of those chores that seems harder than it really is, and can be cleaned easily with the right tools.

Crayon on any surface, but especially on walls, is rather easy to remove. This is another job that Quick’n Brite is especially good at. This stuff will even remove candle wax from clothes and carpet, so a little crayon on a hard surface is simple. Because of how it works, it is uniquely suited to this task. Quick’n Brite is an all natural enzyme cleaner that works great on hundreds of jobs. It will break apart the waxy build-up that is the crayon and lift it off the surface so that you can easily wipe it away. Because it is all natural, and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals, it is totally safe around children and pets, and won’t ever discolor or otherwise ruin any surface you apply it to. This great cleaner will completely remove all signs of the crayon quickly and easily.

How to do it:

Gather your supplies. You will need your Quick’n Brite (best to use a heavy solution which is 3tbs into a quart spray bottle of water. You could also use the paste or liquid full strength) For best results, and the easiest time, you will also want a microfiber cloth. The microfiber cloth is great and will remove smaller build-up like fingerprints and smudges from walls all by itself. When combined with the Quick’n Brite they offer unmatched cleaning ability. You will find that a similar technique, and these two tools will be perfect for cleaning all over your home. Just spray and wipe away.

Wet your microfiber or other cloth and then wring until it is just damp.

Apply the Quick’n Brite to the affected areas of your walls. The easiest way, once again is in a spray bottle. Just spray liberally all over. You could also use the paste or liquid using a scrub sponge or similar tool to apply it.

Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to give it time to work. While it ists it will be breaking down the waxy crayon, and then floating it off the wall’s surface thanks to the natural surfactant involved.

Once the cleaner has had time to work, just come back and wipe clean with your microfiber cloth.

That’s all there is to it. There is no scrubbing or hard work involved. You will find it incredibly easy to remove crayon from your walls using this tried and tested technique. To prevent further damage to your precious walls you might try some preventative measures also. Hang large sheets of paper or newsprint on the walls where your children like to draw the most. You could offer some sort of reward for drawing here instead of the rest of the house. It probably won’t be nearly as apealling as an actual wall that mom or dad would have to clean, but it is worth a shot.

Quick’n Brite

With the growing popularity of touch screen devices, more and more people are using them every day. Whether you have an iPhone, iPod touch, one of those new Samsung touch phones, or some other similar pda or phone, chances are it gets really dirty just like everyone else’s. Fingerprints and grime build up on these devices quickly, leaving users to wonder what the best method is for cleaning. Although it is a pretty simple process, there are several things you will want to avoid to make sure your phone is both clean and in working condition when you finish. Because these devices are so unique, and their screens are so so sensitive to touch, many people don’t know the best way to clean their iPhone or other touch screen device without damaging it. In this situation, less is more, and just a simple tool will give you the best results. We recommend a microfiber cloth as the safest, quickest and easiest way to clean your iPhone. One like our microfiber lens cloth would be ideal, but any other version would be a good choice also.

The microfiber lens cloth is the perfect size at just 5″ x 8″, and features a super fine microfiber suede finish that is guaranteed to never scratch any surface you use it on. It also has thermally welded edges so there are no sewn hems or other similar areas to scratch the surface you are using it on. Use it dry for dusting, polishing and light cleaning, or get it damp to deep clean the surface. We also have a larger 8 x 8 cloth, or a 16 x 16 cloth that feature the same micro suede finish.

When cleaning your touch screen phone you don’t ever want to spray any cleaner directly on the device, and avoiding cleansers all together can be the safest method of all. Because these are electronic devices, liquid is not friendly to their inner workings. It is also recommended that you don’t use Windex, or any cleaner that contains alcohol or ammonia. These common spray cleaner ingredients can harm the touch screen surface. These chemicals can also cause damage to commonly used screen protectors, so you will be doing yourself a favor if you clean it the same way you would clean the phone itself. Another thing to look out for is that the power is turned off on your device. This is always the safest way to go, to minimize the possibility of damage occurring. Also the safest detergent to use is water, but too much can be just as bad as using something different. When applying water to your cloth, make sure to use just a little. Too much moisture can cause damage to your phone that could be permanent. If the cloth is drippingor the surface shows water spots after wiping, then you are using too much water.

Your iPhone’s screen is the single most important part of the device. Not only is the screen the window you view the iPhone interface through, it IS the interface. The following are our recommended steps for cleaning your phone:

Get your microfiber cloth.

Turn off your phone, pda or mp3 player

If necessary, dampen the cloth. (for regular cleanings, a dry cloth is usually sufficient. For stubborn build-up, or for periodic deep cleanings, get the cloth wet under the faucet and then wring out until it is just damp.)

Wipe the screen gently with the cloth making sure to not get any moisture in the jacks or ports. You can also wipe down every other surface of your device to remove dirt and grime all over.

Allow your device to completely dry after you are done cleaning. This should only take a few minutes unless you have used too much water.

Turn your device back on.

A damp microfiber cloth will remove all of the dirt and grime, as well as fingerprints and other stubborn build-up. With just water alone microfiber is able to remove 99% of all dirt, germs and bacteria from the surface of your phone, pda or mp3 player. This is the fast and easy way to clean, and it is also non-toxic and good for the environment.

Don’t you hate it when you buy a new product, or even a used product, and it comes with stickers, tape or other labels on it. You go to remove that sticker or label and then you get that sticky goo left behind. This sticker residue seems impossible to remove, but if you use the right thing, it can be an incredibly easy task.

This kind of problem is common with book, cd and dvd purchases. It is also pretty common for glassware and other similar items to have stickers or labels on them too. Sometimes we even do it to ourselves with tape on glass, children putting their stickers almost anywhere, or other similar instances. Most of us have tried to pick it off, or rub it off, only to be left with a worse looking surface that is both sticky and dirty instead of just sticky.

Common suggested remedies include nail polish remover, lighter fluid, wd40 and other dangerous or otherwise hazardous solutions. These all seem to work some of the time, on certain surfaces, if you apply them the right way. You are often recommended to try it on a small area first because several of these recommended solutions will ruin the surface you are using it on. They can also be toxic, flammable, corrosive and more. If you go to the store you will probably be able to find a specialized goo removing product that may or may not work for your specific situation. These products can often remove the residue, but aren’t good for anything else. They also contain numerous chemicals and probably shouldn’t be handled with bare hands.

So what is the best way?

Well…once again it is Quick’n Brite to the rescue. This is one of the hundreds of jobs that Quick’n Brite is absolutely excellent at. This all natural enzyme cleaner will loosen and float that sticky residue off any surface so you can wipe it completely clean with little effort. Because of how safe this cleaner is, you can use it on any surface. It doesn’t matter if the sticker residue is on glass, plastic, fabric, a TV screen, CD’s, DVD’s or any other surface. When you use Quick’n Brite, you don’t have to worry about it harming what you are using it on. Because it is an enzyme cleaner it does all of the work for you. Just apply the cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, and come back to wipe the surface clean.

When cleaning tape and sticker residue, you will have the best results with the paste version of the cleaner. The consistency of this version is the easiest to apply to this type of build-up, and also is the strongest, so it will work the fastest. You can also use the liquid concentrate, or even a spray bottle of heavy solution(3tbs of QB in a quart of water) will do the trick. Simply apply the paste using your hand or other preferred application method. Make sure that the Quick’n Brite completely covers the sticky area and then just let it sit on there for a few minutes. The cleaner will go to work breaking down the residue and a natural surfactant floats it just off the surface. This way when you return in just minutes the leftover sticker or label will wipe right off with no trouble at all. The surface will be left clean and no stickiness will remain. This stuff works so well for this type of application it could easily be packaged as a specialized cleaner for just this task, but the great thing about Quick’n Brite is the level at which it works on a whole spectrum of cleaning chores. Don’t purchase a specialized goo remover for one little job and then leave it to sit in a drawer somewhere to collect dust. Just buy Quick’n Brite instead and take advantage of all that it has to offer beyond removing gooey sticker and label messes. You will find that it works just as good, and in most cases, better than anything else available for this task. The real benefit though, is that it works great for hundreds of other jobs too.

So buy some Quick’n Brite to remove that sticker residue, and then discover the hundreds of other uses for it. This great natural cleaner will also do similar jobs like removing gum, tar and wax. It is also an excellent stain remover and laundry pretreater, carpet shampoo solution, kitchen degreaser, tub and tile cleaner, and so much more. Buy with confidence because it comes with a full satisfaction guarantee from our company, and a money back guarantee from the manufacturer. This is because it works so well. Most anyone that tries this all-purpose wonder cleaner loves it and becomes a user for life. You have nothing to lose but that sticky build-up. Order yours today!

When I was growing up in the 1940s spring cleaning was an annual event. Housewives prepared for spring cleaning with military precision. Because Monday was wash day, housewives usually started their spring cleaning on that day. But spring cleaning could last days or even weeks.

My mother took down all of the curtains in our house and washed them by hand or in the washing machine. I thought the washing machine was a metal beast, and actually, it could be dangerous. One day I heard my mother call me from the basement. Though her voice sounded calm, I sensed an urgency in it, and ran down the basement stairs.

My mother’s hand and upper arm were caught between two rubber rollers. This wringer mechanism squeezed excess misture from clothes and you had to “feed” the clothes into the wringer one by one. Fortunately, I was able to reverse the rollers quickly and my mother wasn’t injuired.

Like the other housewives on the block, my mother laid our scatter rugs on the front porch to freshen them in the sunshine. Larger rugs were hung on the clotheline and mother beat them with a rug beater. But the “star” of my mother’s cleaning equipment was her vacuum cleaner.

A traveling salesman managed to sweet-talk my mother and gain entry into the house. The salesman spotted my father’s ash tray (he didn’t know about the dangers of smoking) and dumped its contents in the middle of the rug. My mother gasped in alarm. “Don’t worry,” the salesman said. “This vacuum will pick it all up.” And it did.

My mother was so dazzled by the demo and sales pitch that she bought a vacuum cleaner. To say my father wasn’t pleased is an understatement. Young as I was, I picked up on the fact that this was an expensive vacuum cleaner. Howwever, it was efficient, just as the salesman said, and we used it for years.

The electric vacuum and washing machine were invented in 1903. Most families had these appliances, and a few had a mangle, an electric appliance that ironed flat items. Commercial laundries had dryers, but they weren’t avaiable to the home market yet. Housewives dried their laundry on outdoor or indoor clotheslines.

Our pully-type clothesline went from the kitchen window to the garage. This was a simpler time, a time when nobody locked their doors and when modesty was alive and well. My mother hung underwear inside a pillow case so nobody could see “unmentionables.” In my mind I still see sheets flapping in the wind and smell the wonderful outdoorsy smell of those sun-dried sheets.

The concept of spring cleaning is also etched in my mind.

After I married I felt guilty because I wasn’t doing my spring cleaning. What was wrong with me? Nothing was wrong. I lived in a time of electric or gas dryers, dishwashers, dusbusters, and powerful detergents. Cleaning equipment had improved so drastically that I did a little spring cleaning all the time.

Spring cleaning is an old idea, but it’s still a good idea. Today, spring cleaning may include home inspection, trying new products, identifying and removing mold, and maintaining your home.

INSPECT YOUR HOME. Cleaning gives you the chance to look at things close up. I didn’t know we had a cracked window until I looked behind a blind. Apparently the neighborhood boy who mows our lawn had hit a stone and the stone cracked the pane. So check your windows, look for cracks, peeling weather stripping, and other signs of wear.

CHECK FOR MOLD. Though molds are a natural part of your environment, some molds cause health problems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, mold can cause allergic reactions and asthma. Mold grows in damp places so look for moisture as you clean. Fix a moisture problem right away because mold can get worse.

TRY NEW PRODUCTS. A vast array of cleaning products are available to us. I think the new static-charged dust mops and dust cloths are one of the best inventions yet. Stovetop cleaner is another time-saving invention. I use it to clean my stovetop, my oven window and toaster oven window. Stovetop cleaner also removes spots from counters.

MAINTAIN YOUR HOME. I’ve moved so many times I’ve lost count, but I learned a lot from realtors. One thing I learned is that clean places sell faster than dirty ones. Good cleaning practices also protect your home. “I don’t know why, but empty houses get dirty,” a realtor explained. “Dirt builds up and the property starts to deteriorate.” Cleaning may be boring, but think of it as a way to maintain your home.

So I guess our grandmothers and mothers were right about spring cleaning. Thank goodness we have an array of appliances and products to help us. Spring cleaning is an old idea with a new twist. Put on your gloves and get to it!

You don’t have to be a complete tree hugger to want to go green. But now that it’s becoming increasingly clear that global warming is a very real problem, why wouldn’t you want to reduce your impact on the environment?

If the threat of global warming doesn’t spur you into action, perhaps this fact will: Most of the actions you can take to green your home are easy. And while they save energy and other valuable resources, they also save you a little or even a lot of green (read: money). I’m not expecting you to go off the grid, start raising all your own food, or anything that extreme. These are just easy changes that can be made around your house now to make a big difference.

So, without further ado, I present to you The Home Know-It-All’s Top 15 Ways to Go Green Around Your Home (in order from easiest to accomplish to hardest-although I’d say they’re all pretty darn easy).

Unplug household appliances and electronics (like the coffee maker, toaster, and cell phone charger) when they’re not in use. Even if they’re not on, appliances that are plugged in use energy. In fact, as much as 40 percent of all electricity is used to power home appliances that are turned off!

Get the most out of your appliances by only washing full loads of laundry and dishes. Minimize how often you open the refrigerator too. And keep the fridge full-an empty fridge has to work harder to stay cool than a full one.

Turn down the thermostat in cold weather and kick it up higher in warm weather. For each degree below 68 degrees Fahrenheit you set your thermostat during cold weather (or above 78 degrees Fahrenheit in warm weather), you’ll save 3 to 5 percent more heating energy. A programmable thermostat makes this step easy. And using ceiling fans can keep you comfortable even when the thermostat is set higher or lower than you’re used to.

Bring your own (reusable) grocery bags to the store. Paper and plastic grocery bags are no good for the environment-in fact, according to Ideal Bite, about 12 millions barrels of oil and 14 million trees go into producing plastic and paper bags each year. Plus, reusable bags hold more than flimsy plastic sacks and are easier to carry around.

Replace burned out lightbulbs with CFLs. These fluorescent bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescents and last up to 10 times longer. You can save $30 or more in electricity costs for each bulb over its lifetime!

Remember the three Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle!). Note that recycling comes at the end of the list. The most important step toward going green is to reduce your consumption-buy less, and you’ll have less to recycle. In the home, that means buying materials, furnishings, and other items that are well-made, durable, and long-lasting (in other words, go for quality, not quantity). Then, of course, there’s recycling. Recycle everything you possibly can-plastic, paper, bottles, cans, you name it. It’s important to recycle electronics, batteries, toxic household items, and more as well. Learn where to recycle at Earth911.org. Oh, and buy recycled too-all sorts of household items from carpeting to dog beds to paper products are available with recycled content.

Use green cleaning supplies or homemade cleaning concoctions rather than chemical ones.

Paint with no- or low-VOC paints the next time you want to repaint rooms in your home.

Insulate your hot water heater to save energy. Placing an insulative jacket around your hot water heater costs as little as $10 to $20, and pipe insulation is less than $1 per six feet. While you’re at it, turn the water heater down to 120 degrees for more money savings-and to ensure no one gets burned by water that’s too hot.

Plug air leaks around your house. Air leaks waste tons of energy, but they’re easy and inexpensive to take care of. Simply install weatherstripping and caulk around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and plumbing penetrations to stop drafts. Check the attic for leaks too.

Stop using chemicals on your lawn and in your garden. One way to reduce the need for chemicals (and lots of watering) is to try xeriscaping. And while you’re in the garden, check out natural ways to get rid of garden pests too.

Save water by installing low-flow showerheads, faucets, and toilets.

Select Energy Star appliances when it’s time to purchase new ones. Clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, dehumidifiers, and more with the Energy Star label incorporate advanced technologies that use 10 to 50 percent less energy and water than standard models-and they work well too!

Replace single-pane windows with double-pane ones to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in the summer. An added bonus: they’ll reduce noise pollution too.

Purchase sustainable materials for flooring, furnishings, and other home items. Flooring materials such as cork and bamboo are growing in popularity because they’re attractive, durable, and better for the environment than other options. Wood that bears the Forest Stewardship Council has been harvested using environmentally friendly methods-look for sustainably harvested wood furnishings, decking, and more. And check out TreeHugger’s guide to green furniture for more environmentally friendly furniture options.

So there you have it. Ways big and small to go green. This barely scratches the surface, of course. So if you want to learn more about these and other ways to lessen the impact you, your family, and your home have on the environment, check out some of my favorite online resources: Green Home Guide, Lime, The Green Guide, and TreeHugger.

From cars to countertops, these towels cover a wide range of surfaces. An added benefit, is of course the fact that they can be re-used multiple times. This means you can ditch the old rag bin you keep under the kitchen counter.

Now after you’ve used your microfiber towel, you’ll probably notice all the gunk that gets embedded in those tiny fibers. So how does one go about cleaning all this dirt off the towel?

There are definitely best-practices to help make sure you keep your microfiber towels clean without damaging them for their next use. Compiled below is a list of tips for proper maintenance.

Pre-soak in a bucket of warm water and dish detergent to help loosen the dirt particles

Launder in your washing machine with detergent separate from any other type of fabric.

Do not use any bleach or fabric softener when you clean the microfibers. The fabric softener clogs the microfibers while the bleach actually deteriorates the towels

Toss in the dryer and turn to tumble dry (low) or no heat at all. Heat will melt the microfibers and effect their performance

Do not iron the microfibers (once again the heat issue)

Following these simple steps will help give your microfiber towels their maximum life while also enhancing their cleaning power.

A clean and organized closet provides many benefits: better space utilization, your items are organized and accessible, not to mention the biggest gains: an organized closet space adds to the harmony of your home, as well as your mental wellbeing. Our outer world is a reflection of our inner world, and because everything carries with it energy, the mess in our environment can affect how we feel subconsciously. We might suddenly feel very irritable without knowing why. Your closet and the surface spaces of your home are good places to start this cleaning process. This will result in a deeply therapeutic and fulfilling experience.

I did a deep closet cleaning a year ago, and let me tell you, such heavy ‘mental bags’ were lifted off my shoulders. I gave away 11 bags worth of clothing and shoes (see picture) and I felt like a new person: empowered, organized, light and a new beginning.

Here are some strategies for cleaning out your closet space…

Make sure to set aside sufficient time for cleaning. To maximize effectiveness, set aside at least an hour for decluttering and organizing your closet space, or for big cleaning jobs, several sections of time over several days.

SORT AND REMOVE CLUTTER

Removing the clutter is the first step. For this, you will need three boxes and a trash bag.

Box A – holds items that belong in a place other than your closet.

Box B – is for items you no longer need and will donate to charity.

Box C - is for items you should get rid of but feel emotionally unready to give up, i.e., that $100 shirt you bought 2 years ago but never wore.

Trash bag is for any trash you find.

Sort through each item in your closet and decide very quickly which items to keep and which to give away. As you sort, here are several things to consider:

Have you used the item in the past year? If not, it’s probably time to let it go.

Do you own more than one of an item? If so, do you really need multiples of one item?

As you sort clothing, make sure each item fits and still looks attractive. If not, donate or trash it.

For shoes, make sure each pair corresponds to at least one set of clothing you actually wear. If not, there isn’t really a reason to keep them.

With memorabilia, decide if you truly need to keep it. Can you take a picture of it instead and give the item away?

After you’ve finished sorting,

Box A – The contents should be distributed to the correct place in your home.

Box B – Take it directly to your vehicle to give to a local thrift store or charity the next time you’re out.

Box C – Set it aside for a month. If you don’t need the items inside within a month, it’s likely you never will. You can then donate them to charity.

Trash – throw away

ORGANIZE

Because your closet is now cleaned out, it will be much easier to organize. Consider the following organizing tips:

Try using stackable see-through plastic bins for your storage items. This allows you to easily see what’s inside.

Take some time to organize your clothing in a system that works for you. Many people separate clothing by type – pants and tops, work clothing and casual clothing, or winter clothing and summer clothing. Others separate clothing by color which has the side benefit of making your closet attractive as well as organized. The method you choose is completely up to you; just choose a system that makes sense for your life.

For example, I separate my major sections by business casual, evenings and slacks. Within each section, I separate the pants and the tops. Within the tops, I separate button down shirts with casual blazers. I also separate the button-down shirts by blacks, whites, stripes, and other colors. I keep heavier items such as blazers, jackets on the ends of the closet, to keep out of the way from the middle sections, giving the closet a ‘light’ feeling.

It may be helpful to purchase organizing tools such as shoe organizers, over the door hooks, and shelving. This helps maximize your closet space.

Label your storage boxes. You don’t want to have to open every box to find out what’s inside. And please, don’t use a pen to do labeling. Use a black permanent marker. Sharpes are your friends.

Get nice hangers. When I reorganized my closet, I went out and got wood hangers and got rid of all the random miscellaneous mis-matching hangers I had in the closet. This way, all your hangings look consistent (like in a store). It’s very calming for the mind to look at. I feel so good each time I look inside the closet, that I’ve already got my money’s worth after the first 3 days.

After all your hard work, step back and fully enjoy the fruit of your labor. How do you feel? Pretty rewarding, eh? You will suddenly experience a sense of mental clarity and calmness as a result of days.

Everyone enjoys a nice, roaring fire, but very few of us like the black build-up that can accumulate over time. Smoke and soot can billow out and coat your brick or stone. The mantle, the firebox and every other area can become dingy and ugly over time. Most people think this is an impossible cleaning chore due to the dark black stains and the surface they are on, but as with any job, if you have the right tools, it is easy. Follow these easy steps to ensure you always have a clean fireplace.

Fireplace Maintenance:
In order to ensure safe efficient use of your fireplace, it will need regular care and cleaning. Creosote, a flammable tar like substance, accumulates in the chimney and flue and can be hazardous if it is not removed. Give your fireplace and its accessories routine cleaning throughout the wood-burning season to eliminate an accumulation of soot, ashes, and creosote tars. Here are some easy steps to take to keep you fireplace clean longer:

Burn only seasoned, well-dried wood. This will eliminate soot, smoke and creosote accumulation.

Inspect the firebox, flue, and chimney annually. Check for creosote build-up or blockage.

Vacuum the hearth area weekly. Make sure all the embers have been extinguished for at least 12 hours.

Do not use water to drown a fire unless there is an emergency. It will make a nasty paste out of the ashes.

Never use an abrasive cleanser inside the fireplace. Many contain dangerous chemicals that will leave a flammable residue.

When cleaning your fireplace, sprinkle damp coffee grounds over the cooled ashes to keep down the dust.

Soot and Smoke Residue Cleaning:
Most often when people recommend solutions to clean soot and tar off brick, they will suggest a harsh chemical cleanser, something involving a wire brush, or a solution of acid. Each of these methods is either too much effort, or too dangerous to be considered a good way to clean. The following is a short list of outdated brick cleaning methods. These are common, but require special steps or significant effort. For a quick and easy method that is also chemical free, read the section that follows.

Formula 1: Mix one ounce of soap and one ounce of table salt with enough water to make a cream. Rub mixture into brick surface with cloth; allow to dry at least ten minutes and remove with stiff brush. (the stiff brush part sounds like hard work-salt is not known for it’s cleaning ability)

Formula 2: Make a thick mixture of soap or detergent, pumice, a little ammonia and hot water. Paint the mixture on the surface and let dry. Rub off with a wet scrub brush. You are using alkali and a mild abrasive to remove the greasy soil. (quite a mixture…again with the stiff brush)

Formula 3: Shave a bar of naptha soap into a container and add 3 quarts of water. Bring mixture to a full boil until the soap melts. Cool. Add 1 cup ammonia and one pound of pumice. Mix thoroughly. Brush in onto all sooty surfaces and let stand one hour or more. Rub off with a stiff-bristle brush. Rinse “gook” away with warm water, then finish off with a medium to strong detergent and rinse again with warm water. (this sounds too hard to make…too many steps)

Formula 4: Dissolve 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) or Spic & Span in one gallon of hot water. With stiff scrub brush, scrub brick surface. Rinse with plenty of warm water. Repeat if soot or greasy stain is not removed. More TSP may be added if necessary, up to 1 cup per gallon. This is a very strong solution; avoid getting on skin, carpet, or fabrics. (acid is dangerous and better left to the pros)

All of the previous methods involve using a stiff brush to scrub away the soot. Using a scrub brush and water would produce similar results because it is the elbow grease doing the cleaning. Save yourself time and effort when cleaning soot stains from brick, stone walls, carpet and more by using Quick’n Brite.

The Easiest Way to Remove Soot Residue:
Using Quick’n Brite is the easiest way to clean hundreds of things all over your home office or vehicle, but it works great on soot, creosote and tar specifically. It is an enzyme cleaner, so it is designed to break apart and remove organic stains and build-up with little effort. There are no chemicals or harsh substances involved and you won’t have to drive yourself crazy scrubbing either. QnB will make quick work of any soot or tar stain on any surface. You don’t have to worry about it ruining anything you use it on and it is so safe you don’t nered to wear gloves when you clean with it. Just apply the cleaner and let it do the work for you. Your fireplace will be left looking like new after you clean it with Quick’n Brite.

How To Use It:
It is important to remove any loose particles with a vacuum in order to make the job easier. This way you are only using Quick’n Brite to remove the stain and you are not creating a bigger mess by wetting ashes or other loose chunks. To clean any affected surface use a wet brush or scrub sponge to apply the cleaner. You can use either the paste or the liquid, but you should apply it full strength. Work it into the stains using a circular motion(like waxing a car). Once it is on, just let the cleaner sit for 10-15 minutes to allow it time to work. After that, take spray bottle with plain water in it and rinse the area. Take a dry terry cloth towel to completely buff out the stain. For extremely bad areas, repeat the process, if necessary. You can use it on the hearth, the mantle, the screen, glass doors, surrounding walls, the carpet and more. QnB will remove smoke, soot, creosote and pitch.

Buy it for your fireplace and use it everywhere else when you are done. Quick’n Brite is the best stain fighter, tub and tile cleaner, carpet shampoo and more. It has hundreds of uses unlike other specialty cleaners. It is also 100% biodegradable and chemical-free. It is totally safe around children and pets, yet works better than virtually anything else on the market.

In case you are still undecided, Quick’n Brite comes with a full money back guarantee from the manufacturer and a 100% satisfaction guarantee from us. If you are not happy, or it doesn’t work like we say it does, you can return it for a full refund.

This is a great list of the most germ ridden places and things. Some of these are a little surprising, but for the most part it seems you will find the most germs in high-traffic, public places. It is important to prevent prolonged contact with these germs in order to remain healthy. This list was originally reported in Health Magazine and can be seen in full detail there. Here is the list:

Your kitchen sink

Airplane bathrooms

A load of wet laundry

Public drinking fountains

Shopping cart handles

ATM buttons

Your handbag

Playgrounds

Mats and machines at health clubs

Your bathtub

Your office phone

The hotel-room remote control

This list really makes me want to wash my hands more frequently, dry my laundry immediately, clean my whole house and stop working out at the gym. Germs can be gross, but you can take some simple steps to prevent them from ruining your day. With flu season just around the corner, washing your hands can greatly reduce your risks of getting sick. Cleaning with microfiber can be a quick and easy way to remove germs from your house. It is important to be aware, but not afraid of these germy places.

Many people choose hardwood flooring because it is easy to maintain and keep looking great. True, you will not have to worry about hardwood staining if you spill grape juice on it, as you do with carpet. However, there are a few things that you need to remember when you are dealing with hardwood. Once you have spent a great deal of time and money on your beautiful hardwood floor, you will want to keep it looking fantastic. Many people choose hardwood flooring because it is easy to maintain and keep looking great. True, you will not have to worry about hardwood staining if you spill grape juice on it, as you do with carpet. However, there are a few things that you need to remember when you are dealing with hardwood.

1) The most important cleaning tip for hardwood is preventative maintenance. By cleaning your floors regularly and sweeping or vacuuming dirt and debris, you will save yourself a lot of time and expense in the long run.

2) Wipe up any spills as soon as they occur. Although you will not have an instant stain when you spill on hardwood floor as you do with carpet, you may expose your hardwood to staining if you do not wipe up spills in a timely fashion. Once stains have a chance to set into the hardwood you may have to refinish the floor in order to get the stain out.

3) Sweep your floor everyday or as needed. It is important to sweep up any dirt or debris off of your floor as necessary so that the dirt doesn’t scratch the wood. This will vary from house to house of course. If you have a high traffic home, you may need to sweep a few times a day. Although, you may only need to sweep every few days. A rubber broom is extremely effective and safe to use on hardwood floors. People with pets especially love them because they work great on pet hair.

4) Use a hardwood cleaner once a week to keep your floor looking its best. Hardwood floor cleaners are available at any home improvement center or at a flooring center. They are quite easy to use, and with a little preventative maintenance, you will thank yourself in the future. Simply spray the cleaner on and use a cloth or hardwood broom to buff the floor gently.

5) Never use water and soap when cleaning your hardwood. Hardwood is not like linoleum or even laminate flooring and you cannot use a bucket of sudsy, soapy water to clean it. In fact, you can damage your floor if you try to mop it in a traditional style. Because wood is susceptible to water damage, you want to minimize the contact that your floor has with water. Water will seep into the cracks of the boards and can cause swelling, discoloration and deformation of the boards. The best mop for hardwood is one that uses very little liquid. Try using a microfiber mop for streak-free and polished floors.

6) Protect your floor from furniture scratches and gouges. It is a very good idea to place felt on the bottom of all of your furniture in order to protect it from scratches. This is particularly important for furniture pieces that move a great deal such as your kitchen chairs. But it is a good idea to protect all pieces equally. You can purchase felt at the local hardware store, and cut it to size to fit the bottom of every piece of furniture that you have.

7) Polish your floor regularly. If you have a hardwood floor with a wax finish, you may want to wax it on a regular basis to keep it looking shiny and new. The waxing process will also help buff any scratches out of your floor as well. Every wax product is different so it is important to read the directions carefully and also consult the manufactures guidelines of your flooring before applying any wax product.

With a little bit of preventative maintenance and some common sense, you will be able to keep your hardwood floor looking fabulous for many years. There are only a few simple steps and rules to follow when dealing with hardwood flooring because it is actually one of the easiest flooring types to care for.
