When I was growing up in the 1940s spring cleaning was an annual event. Housewives prepared for spring cleaning with military precision. Because Monday was wash day, housewives usually started their spring cleaning on that day. But spring cleaning could last days or even weeks.
My mother took down all of the curtains in our house and washed them by hand or in the washing machine. I thought the washing machine was a metal beast, and actually, it could be dangerous. One day I heard my mother call me from the basement. Though her voice sounded calm, I sensed an urgency in it, and ran down the basement stairs.
My mother’s hand and upper arm were caught between two rubber rollers. This wringer mechanism squeezed excess misture from clothes and you had to “feed” the clothes into the wringer one by one. Fortunately, I was able to reverse the rollers quickly and my mother wasn’t injuired.

A clean and organized closet provides many benefits: better space utilization, your items are organized and accessible, not to mention the biggest gains: an organized closet space adds to the harmony of your home, as well as your mental wellbeing. Our outer world is a reflection of our inner world, and because everything carries with it energy, the mess in our environment can affect how we feel subconsciously. We might suddenly feel very irritable without knowing why. Your closet and the surface spaces of your home are good places to start this cleaning process. This will result in a deeply therapeutic and fulfilling experience.
I did a deep closet cleaning a year ago, and let me tell you, such heavy ‘mental bags’ were lifted off my shoulders. I gave away 11 bags worth of clothing and shoes (see picture) and I felt like a new person: empowered, organized, light and a new beginning.

One of the most common things I get asked is how to safely clean a laptop screen. By far the best way is to use a microfiber cloth. These can be found cheaply, and do an excellent job. Here’s how they work….
Microfiber cloths do an excellent job of picking up dust and removing smudges. They will even remove oily fingerprints from a surface without spreading it around and without any additional cleaners. They are environmentally & economically friendly by reducing money spent on cleaners, paper towels and trash that has been generated.
Please note: Treat any of the following screen types as you would an expensive camera lens, using high quality cleaning materials and tested techniques.
LCD screens are not glass! The LCD surface is made of a soft film that is vulnerable to scratches, damage by sharp articles and/or improper cleaners.
Question:
I just had the windows on my car tinted. I heard that there are some cleaners you shouldn’t use on tint. My question is: What is the best way to clean tinted windows?
Answer:
Many car owners choose to customize their vehicle with after market window tint. This is especially true in warm, sunny climates. This will make your car look great and provide some protection, but when it comes time for cleaning, you will need to take special care. Many everyday cleaners and techniques will actually damage your newly tinted windows over time.
What is it?
Window tint is actually a thin film that is applied to the inside of your vehicles window. THere are several different shades to choose from, but all provide some degree of shade and privacy. This thin film is a plastic material called mylar. Some characteristics of this material are that it is prone to scratching or tearing, and can fade over time if ammonia is used on it.

Your elusive 12 week-old puppy walks into the living room. “Where have you been?” you ask, as if he will answer you. You immediately jump up and begin your search. Everything seems fine in the bedroom. Everything seems fine in the den. Everything is fine in the dining roo—oh no! Not your brand new Oriental rug. What are you going to do?Time is of the essence. So, you grab your trusty bottle of miracle spot remover and spray it directly on the stain. You press a towel you grabbed from the kitchen into the stain. You rub and scrub. It doesn’t seem like it’s working, so you try more spot remover and you scrub harder. At least you’re trying to take care of the accident quickly, but now you’ve got a bigger problem. You have an even larger puddle that includes urine with spot remover added to it. Even worse, you’ve scrubbed the rug so hard the fibers look frayed and unraveled. Adding spot remover to a urine stain and brushing it in does not mean you are removing the stain. Where did the stain go? You’ve spread it in the backing of the rug.

Mom, are you spending way too much time sorting, washing, and folding laundry?
Here are some quick easy tips to help get you out of the laundry room!
1) Sort Less
With the exception of whites that need to be bleached, brand new dark or red items that bleed or delicates, you may not need to sort laundry as much as you think.
Most high quality clothing doesn’t bleed. And there is no crime in washing towels with other laundry unless it will get linty (like microfiber cleaning cloths).
You might want to sort laundry by what room it will end up in. I throw my boy’s laundry all in together and despite what home economics gurus might tell you, I haven’t noticed any bad effects! This method simplifies things because each load goes to the same place. Instead of walking around the house delivering laundry to each room, you save energy and time.
My wife recently cleaned our oven. Not the inside but the top. You know, around the elements where it is just burnt on. We recently have changed to natural cleaning. So when it came time for the oven, my wife used non-toxic general purpose cleaner. While this is highly concentrated, the stains were also quite old. So, she used it full strength. She didn’t need a mask or gloves to do this. She just let it soak & then the baked-on crud slowly came off with some scrubbing.
Here’s the point. The various commercial cleaners from the store contain petroleum distillates. They produce potentially deadly fumes & are harmful to our environment. Not to mention the fact they cost much more per ounce then the natural cleaners. Often their packaging is non-recyclable.
The call came unexpectedly. It was my mother. She was in a panic about the need to clean year’s worth of dirt off the windows on her house. “I love ll the views,†she said, “but I don’t want to spend the whole ay cleaning windows.†No problem, I told her. In “Name that Tune†fashion, I told her how she could clean windows with not five, not four, but only three window-cleaning tools — and do it faster than she ever thought possible. “This, I want to hear,†she said.Outdated methods
Too often, window cleaning turns into a dreaded chore. That’s because until now we’ve cleaned with everything from old shirts, discarded towels, newspaper, and pallets of paper towels. If that’s what I had to work with, I’d board up my windows. But, clean windows aren’t out of your reach.
There’s nothing like a cleanser that actually works as advertised, bulldozing through dirt and leaving a surface sparkling clean. But conventional cleaning products can actually leave indoor air polluted with a toxic smog of petrochemical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the synthetic fragrances used to mask them.
Think, then, what damage cleaning products used on a regular basis year-round can do in the enclosed space of a home, where VOCs can build up for months. “When they evaporate, they are transported directly to the brain, where they can be as intoxicating as ether or chloroform,” says Kaye Kilburn, professor of internal medicine at the University of Southern California medical school. “They are palpably dangerous to health.” In other words, when someone complains of being knocked out after cleaning house, it’s likely more than just a turn of phrase.

A:Cleaning the tub or shower can be one of the toughest chores in your home. Soap scum, water stains, dirt, grime and grease all build-up over time and can seem impossible to remove. If you are using a traditional tub and tile cleaner, you may be making the job harder than it has to be, and risking your health with the dangerous chemicals as well. Many of these cleaners leave behind a sticky residue that only causes the dirt to build up faster. Plus you are spraying surfaces with chemicals that you then expose your bare skin to.
With the many advances in technology, one fabulous development is the microfiber cleaning cloth. The advantages of these are many, and the result is a clean home with a minimized need for cleaning products. This in turn creates a higher quality of indoor air pollution, costs less, and is better for the environment.
What is microfiber?
It is a very fine synthetic (man made) fiber that can be woven into fabrics. It allows fabrics to hang and handle as they naturally would, but with the added benefits of washing better, breathing better, and repelling or retaining water better, depending on the purpose. Microfibers are made from in acrylic, nylon, polyester, and rayon forms. For cleaning, microfiber cleaning cloths can often be used alone or with small amounts of cleaning products. When designed for cleaning, microfiber cleaning cloths can retain moisture much better, which means fewer trips to the sink. It also means that cleaning up spills takes much less effort, as the microfiber cleaning cloth can absorb more liquid than a typical sponge.

They are quickly becoming the favored screen type for both computers and TVs, but LCD screens can be intimidating to clean. Most people are unsure of the correct way to clean their screen, so they end up getting duped into spending a lot of money on fancy cleaning supplies that they don’t need. It is true that LCD screens can be kinda sensitive, but there are easy ways to clean them without worrying about scratches or other damage. In this article we will go over a straight forward traditional method as well as the fast and easy simplygood method.
First we have to understand a little bit of background about LCD screens to know why we should be careful when cleaning. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; which has crystal molecules sandwiched under layers of polarized panels. These panels are usually made of “plastic-like” polymer materials, and like any plastics they can be easily scratched or gouged, even by just your fingernails! That’s why cleaning LCDs requires special care while cleaning compared to the old glass CRT monitors.
